Scenes from the Unconscious: Micah Ofstedahl & Leona Sewitsky
June 23 – August 4, 2017, Reception: Friday, July 21, 5-8pm
Ashland artist Micah Ofstedahl combines the conscious observations of science with the subconscious imagination of the mind in his surrealistic acrylic paintings. Jacksonville artist Leona Keene Sewitsky explores the unconscious mind in playful, dreamlike, and mysterious sculptures created from recycled objects and papier maché.
Micah Ofstedahl was born and raised in Austin, Minnesota and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture and ceramics from Minnesota State University. Micah describes his work as an exploration of the unknown and the importance of its relationship to scientific and human advancement. Micah states, “I am constantly being amazed by the hidden beauty and complexity of the world and this is largely what I hope to convey to my audience.”
Leona Keene Sewitsky resides in Jacksonville and has been creating artwork out of recycled objects and paper mache for eleven years. She enjoys the challenge of assembling mismatched items, sculpting and painting paperclay heads, and creating a carnival of characters. Exploring the unconscious dream state of the mind in sculptures and assemblages, Leona creates original artwork that is humorous, familiar, and sometimes other worldly.
