ROSEBURG, OR – The Umpqua Valley Arts Association is pleased to present the 2016 ArtWorks Northwest artists selected for the group exhibition of works, selected by juror Stephen Hayes. ArtWorks Northwest will run from May 6, 2016 – July 8, 2016 with an opening reception on Friday, May 6th from 5 pm – 7 pm. There will be a discussion and tour with the juror on Saturday, May 7th from 11 am-12 pm.
History of ArtWorks Northwest
Originally titled “Hundred Valleys” when it was founded in 2007, this exhibit showcased local pride in the beautiful Umpqua Valley area of Oregon. In 2012 the name changed to reflect the broader regional outreach and impact of this increasingly important venue; ArtWorks NW’s sister show, PhotoWorks NW, also began in 2012. Finally, in 2015, UVAA married both shows into one exhibition.
From the Juror
“When I agreed to serve as juror for the UVAA 2016 ArtWorks Northwest exhibition there was no way for me to anticipate the scope, and pleasure of the job. Now, having spent long hours over many days carefully considering the work of over 400 entries I marvel at the breadth and depth of the artwork coming out of the region. The job was made more, not less, difficult by the fact that there is so much work of merit being made here, and I would have liked to include many more works than the limited space that the Hallie Ford Gallery can accommodate. In the end, I hope that this selection elicits a picture of the healthy diversity of thought and depth of engagement that defines the artists of the Pacific Northwest.
The range of materials, scale, imagery, media and content of submissions is impressive. Artists in the region are making work for personal expression, as social or political comment, to embrace and engage with materials for their own sake, and to share a love of the beauty of the natural and constructed world we traverse.”
