8/20/17 Fireside Chat with Stefan Baumann Developing a Style of Painting While talking about my upcoming workshop in October with a group of students around the campfire after a day of Plein Air painting at The Grand View Ranch, one of the students asked, “How do you find your own style of painting?” Developing a style of painting is not something that you set out to do. It is something that develops over time. Usually, an “artist’s style” begins with you being interested in other artists’ style, brushstrokes and color harmony. Or it may be the subject matter or mood that influences the development of your artistic style, Location has a lot to do with a style. Many artists join groups who share similar interests and they develop a style based on the environment. For example, there is a style of painting that can be found in Pasadena that

Painting a Moving Target, by Stefan Baumann

Painting a moving target like waves in the ocean isn’t easy but there is a rhythm to nature and also to waves, and this pattern of movement can be captured in a brief time as I have done in this painting.

“Spring in Edgewood” By Stefan Baumann

2nd Plein Air Convention & Expo

In the painting “Spring in Edgewood”, I captured a location on canvas that would have been overlooked into a painting of the movement of light and shadow creating a quaint little masterpiece.

Plein Air Oil Painting by Stefan Baumann

Six years ago Stefan’s desire to live in a place of natural beauty and to paint what he loves with integrity brought him to the Shasta Forest where he paints stunning views of Northern California and Oregon in his home/studio in Mt. Shasta. He shares his talent, knowledge, and enthusiasm for art with others by featuring his artwork at the Gallery in Mt. Shasta and Central Art Supply Studio and offering weekly oil painting classes in Medford, Mt. Shasta, and Redding. He also posts a monthly blog with plein air paintings, offers 3-day outdoor painting workshops in Mt. Shasta, and his series called “The Grand View” airs periodically on local Create TV and PBS stations.

The Grand View Ranch: Daily Painting and Observations

Painting by Stefan Baumann

The more you paint, the more mistakes you make, and the more mistakes, the more you learn how to avoid and correct those mistakes, creating more knowledge and fewer mistakes in the first place. Despite what you see in DVD’s and painting shows on TV, none of the artists have the ability to paint what they intend to paint without experimenting. In fact, the nature of painting is one of constantly correcting the stroke you just placed on the canvas by deciding what the next stroke will be. How you repair your mistakes becomes your technique and style, and this process takes making many mistakes, many HUGE MISTAKES.
