Southern Oregon Society of Artists will show their work for critique on Monday, July 27, at the Medford library with Stefan Baumann as juror. The public is invited to attend. Critique participation is open only to current members of the Southern Oregon Society of Artists (SOSA). Refreshments will be provided.

Mr. Baumann, an artist for 35 years, is also the creator of the PBS series, “The Grand View: America’s National Parks Through the Eyes of an Artist” featuring more than 20 parks. He teaches oil painting at Central Art Supply

Art du Jour Gallery will host nationally known artist Stefan Baumann and Medford’s talented group, The Grand View Artists, in a holiday art show from Tuesday, December 2, through Friday, January 30. The gallery will hold Third Friday Artists’ Receptions on Dec. 19th and January 17th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend these events. Art du Jour Gallery, at 213 E. Main in Medford, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (excluding holidays).

1st Place in Painting at Red Bluff Western Art Show

I am so excited and delighted to receive a blue ribbon and 1st place prize for my entry called “Drag Rider” in the Red Bluff National Western Art Show today.  There were over 150 entries in the show and my painting of a tired cowboy on horseback who is bringing in the last of the cattle for the day won 1st place in the painting division. ARTISTS DAY AT HANLEY FARM JUNE 16TH

One Sunday each month during the summer, SOHS is opening Hanley Farm to the community. We call it Open Farm Day! Sunday, June 16 is Artists Day. Artists from Southern Oregon will be at Hanley, painting, photographing and displaying their work.

Many will have unique pieces of Southern Oregon art for sale. Join us at the Farm to talk with the artists, enjoy a picnic lunch (bring your own) and soak up some of the positive energy of historic Hanley Farm. Docent guided tours of Hanley House are $3, free for SOHS members. The Farm is open from 11am – 3pm this Sunday, June 16. Parking is free. Admission is free. Art is not free.

Artists don’t capture, but create.

Painting on location is one of the most difficult forms of art there is, and that said, it is also the most pleasing activities known to an artist. In the painting “Spring in Edgewood”, I captured a location on canvas that would have been overlooked into a painting of the movement of light and shadow creating a quaint little masterpiece.

I have been invited to be a field instructor on location at The Plein Air convention in Monterey, California on April 10-14, 2013. Is that a big deal? YES! When I first started to create The Grand View, few if any artists knew about painting on location, and most artists painted in the studio from photos. The term Plein Air was not even used to talk about outdoor painting, let alone be part of a movement.
