The Rogue Valley has a long history showcasing local artistic talent. SOHS has the paintings that Britt created from photographs, Dorland Robinson’s moody, subtle works, and artifacts from Eugene Bennett’s studio. Dawna Curler, SOHS Archivist Pat Harper and local artists Bruce Bayard and Ann DiSalvo will talk about art created in the 1800s through the 2000s at the next Tales from the Collection event and also explain how the Rogue Galley has played such an important role in the region. Free and open to all who love history.

Artist’s Day at Hanley Farm June 14

June 14 at Hanley Farm – Flag Day Celebration, Artists Fair & Old Fashioned Lawn Party!

A day you won’t want to miss!!!! Put June 14 on your calendar and plan to join us for an old-fashioned lawn party at historic Hanley Farm.

Dozens of artists will be practicing their craft and selling their wares. Maybe you’ll fund that unique gift or beautiful piece of art work you’ve been seeking for your home! Or take a guided tour of the historic Hanley House. And of course, much MORE, including – music by The Rogue Suspects; a flag field; a presentation by Chelsea Rose, of SOU Archaeology lab; traditional games such as badminton and horseshoes; and farm-fresh food from the Hanley Kitchen.

The 2014 Children’s Heritage Fair at Hanley Farm is just around the corner. This cherished annual event relies heavily on volunteers like you. We have an exciting line-up this year and hope you will join us!

Hands-on Homesteading Crafts, Interactive Demonstrations, Heritage Breed Animals, Old-Fashioned Kitchen Skills, & much more! Volunteers are still needed especially for SATURDAY, MAY 31 to assist at the craft and cooking stations. THE SOUTHERN OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE A NEW EXHIBIT: FAR OUT! SOUTHERN OREGON IN THE 1960s

 

The Southern Oregon Historical Society will open a major new exhibit of artifacts, photographs and stories illustrating life in Southern Oregon in the 1960s in a space donated by the Historic Woolworth Building. The exhibit, Far Out! Southern Oregon in the 1960s, will be open to the public from March 29 through April 27.

 

The 60s conjures images of JFK and Camelot, the Beatles and the British Invasion, mini-skirts and bell-bottoms, the rise of hippie culture and the anti-war movement, Woodstock, and the generation gap. Culture change in the 1960s came hard and fast. The tone and influence of popular music evolved with unprecedented speed. Fashion became a statement of an individual’s social, political and generational affiliation.

ARTISTS DAY AT HANLEY FARM JUNE 16TH

One Sunday each month during the summer, SOHS is opening Hanley Farm to the community. We call it Open Farm Day! Sunday, June 16 is Artists Day. Artists from Southern Oregon will be at Hanley, painting, photographing and displaying their work.

Many will have unique pieces of Southern Oregon art for sale. Join us at the Farm to talk with the artists, enjoy a picnic lunch (bring your own) and soak up some of the positive energy of historic Hanley Farm. Docent guided tours of Hanley House are $3, free for SOHS members. The Farm is open from 11am – 3pm this Sunday, June 16. Parking is free. Admission is free. Art is not free.

// The Southern Oregon Historical Society is planning a month-long benefit show for December and has called in the Southern Oregon Artists Resource to help with the planning and promotion of the event. Here’s the shout:

The Southern Oregon Historical Society, in cooperation with Stefan Baumann of The Grand View and Hannah West of the Southern Oregon Artists Resource, is calling all artists in Southern Oregon and Northern California to submit their artwork for a special month-long event to take place at the Southern Oregon Historical Society Museum located in downtown Medford.

We are inviting artists to submit acrylic, watercolor, mixed medium and oil paintings, as well as photographs and other two-dimensional artwork of the landmarks, landscapes buildings, and portraits that represent Southern Oregon’s treasured past.
