For 40 days in March and April, the lambing barn at the Wahl…

For 40 days in March and April, the lambing barn at the Wahl family Elk River ranch is a 24/7 labor, delivery and post partum destination. Here ranch staff keep a watchful eye on expectant ewes and help welcome new lambs into the world. By mid April, 4000 ewes with 7000 lambs in tow will complete their stay in the L&D unit and head out to graze pasture overlooking the Pacific.

Mary and Pete Wahl (photo 2) are fourth generation owners and operators of the family ranch with their siblings Terry and Tooz. Their successful family enterprise reflects years of hands on experience with livestock plus creative land management. Ecological sustainability makes good economic sense for the Wahls; about 25% of the Elk River ranch land is reserved for riparian and other wildlife habitat.
