2013 Season for Nonviolence: A Season of Peace began Wednesday, January 30 and continues through April 4. Arun and Sunanda Gandhi of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence helped create the movement that directs educational and media attention to the philosophy of attaining peace through nonviolent action as demonstrated by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The season is“a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities,” explained Unity of Bandon’s Reverend Robin Haruna.

Locally, seasonal observance will include Peace Rocks painting parties Friday, February 22 at 11 AM; Tuesday, March 12 at 7 PM; and Tuesday, April 2 at 7 PM at Unity of Bandon, 50211 Hwy 101. Community members are invited to bring a friend and paint some rocks. All supplies are provided.

The Peace Rocks project had its genesis with Bandon resident Jane Clark during the 2006 Season for Nonviolence. Since then, residents and visitors to the southern Oregon coast have painted thousands of rocks with messages of peace–the rocks are shared around the world. In 2012, the project was recognized by Rotary International. Learn more about Peace Rocks at peacerocks.org.
