Lyda Rose

I’ve written about Rogue Valley Roses before – and I’m still such a big fan.  Mrs. Janet Inada graciously hosted myself and two other artists for an afternoon of painting on her A M A Z I N G rose farm in late May of this year.  She grows and sells roses on their own […]

Mount Shasta, Hot Summer Day

Mount Shasta, Hot Summer Day ~ Original Oil Painting By Stefan Baumann 24″x 36″ Oil on Linen Framing Black frame with gold carving Signed Lower Left – Baumann  Monogram GV  Date: 2012 Provenance This remote location is hidden from view can be found high on the eastern side of Castle Crags. This grand vista of Mount Shasta beckoned me to come into the wilderness near Heart Lake where I first viewed this scene. I captured the image as a small sketch on location, later creating this larger version of the vista called “Hot Summer Day” in my studio. The painting is…

Farmhouse at Winters Cutoff ~ Original Landscape Painting by Stefan Baumann  12″ x 18″ Oil on Linen Canvas Framing Framed in dark wood with gold Signed Lower Right – Baumann  Monogram GV  Date: 2012 Provenance This beautiful old farmhouse near Winters cutoff is the first landmark that I see as I return from teaching classes for two days in the Bay area.  I know I am on my way home to Mount Shasta when I drive on this road dotted with old structures, barns, and farm equipment. Old farmhouses like this one reminds me of a time when families worked…

Pompadour Panarama

I had a great time painting in rainy weather a few weeks ago – Pompadour Bluff,  a notable rock formation just outside Ashland, OR. They are separate paintings but were done in the same scale, from the same place, so they flow together.    Filed under: Landscape, painting, Paintings Tagged: 2014, art, fine art, landscape, […]

Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop

Downtown Medford, by Sarah F. Burns

I’m gearing up for a landscape painting workshop in June, prepping my slide lecture and picking out great places to paint. I like my classes to be fun and relaxed while being focused and rigorous. We’ll be focused on oil painting, but drawing with charcoal or graphite would be a great option for those who […]

More Paintings of Phoenix, Oregon

This pear packing plant by First, Colver and C street is a great painting location.  Just a few blocks from my house, I run past it several times a week and keep seeing more good vantage points to paint from.  This is a warm up, I’m getting my feet wet for the outdoor painting season. […]

Portrait of Beth

My favorite working method is having the model come to your studio many days in a row (nine sessions, unless I lost count) – instead of the way I used to work, which was have the model come once a week for a number of weeks.  When you have the model in the room everyday, […]

Be Prepared to Paint

“Ashland Barn” by Stefan Baumann   Last week I was traveling in Medford, Oregon, prepared to paint with my brushes, paints, and canvases in my truck, when I took an unexpected turn off the freeway onto a quiet country road. It had been raining and a magnificent cloud formation with impressive effects of light covered the sky. I drove by an old pear orchard, and noticed a beautiful pear tree covered with blossoms that had an old barn as a backdrop. As I came closer to the tree, the sky opened and a beam of sunlight lit up the metal…
