The Rogue Valley has a long history showcasing local artistic talent. SOHS has the paintings that Britt created from photographs, Dorland Robinson’s moody, subtle works, and artifacts from Eugene Bennett’s studio. Dawna Curler, SOHS Archivist Pat Harper and local artists Bruce Bayard and Ann DiSalvo will talk about art created in the 1800s through the 2000s at the next Tales from the Collection event and also explain how the Rogue Galley has played such an important role in the region. Eugene Bennett and Friends: His Personal Art Collection May 9 – July 3, 2014, Reception: Friday, May 16, 5-8pm The Rogue Gallery presents works from the private collection of Eugene Bennett including paintings, drawings, sculptures, assemblages, prints, and ceramics. The exhibit features the work of nationally and regionally known artists collected by Eugene Bennett as well as favorites of his own work. All works will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale of artwork will go to the Rogue Gallery Endowment and the Oregon Community Foundation. In addition to the endowment, the Bennett estate also appointed the Rogue Gallery & Art Center as the seller of his personal artwork from his estate. In October, the Eugene Bennett estate at 355 S. Oregon Street, Jacksonville, Oregon was purchased by Frank DeLuca and Ken Gregg. For 50 years, the property had been known as the Bennett Estate and was home to working artist Eugene Bennett, where the renowned artist lived and painted. The home & studio sit on 2.24 acres and is listed on the historic property registry. Built in 1856, the property functioned as the Eagle Brewery Saloon until the early 1900’s. This year during the Art in Bloom Festival, the Rogue Gallery & Art Center opens Eugene Bennett: A Life in Art, an exhibition featuring the art of one of the Rogue Valley’s most loved artists, an influential teacher, and a founder of the Rogue Gallery & Art Center. Numerous works on display were held in the artist’s personal collection and have never before been offered to the public. The public is invited to attend a free RECEPTION held on Friday, May 18 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm during Third Friday in Downtown Medford. During the Art In Bloom festival weekend, the RGAC will host a Community Mural Project inspired by Eugene Bennett’s creativity and using his art materials.
