The Great Metal Works Metal Art by Cheryl D. Garcia April 1st, 2015

“Brittilaria” at Britt Festival Grounds

Cheryl has been working on one of the most ambitious and inspired sculptures of her career. Ten years ago during the first Spring after she moved to Jacksonville from Ashland she was hiking in the hills around town when she first happened across a small clan of the lily family, the Frittilaria. With a half dozen or so members in Southern Oregon, they each share a brilliant red bell like flower. None of them stand more than a foot high and one of them only occurs in the Jacksonville Woodlands around the Britt Festival.

When Cheryl returned to her studio instead of picking up her grinder and getting back to the artwork she was working on she pulled out her sketchbook and sketched the blossomed subject with colored pencils.

June Update from Metal Artist Cheryl D. Garcia

As I walk around my home and garden, I come across pieces of my metalwork signed back in 1993. I never dreamed back then that I would be coming up on twenty years of bringing my vision and artwork into the world through metalwork. I am continually looking forward to my new projects and find constant inspiration in my clients who have helped to make my art a possibility. My development as an artist and as a human being has been driven and supported by so many people that I feel privileged to have known and call my friends… I Thank You!

Dragons and Art for Chinese New Year 2012 in Jacksonville

Chinese New Year's Parade, Jacksonville 2012

Last year I spoke with Tami Lohman, art teacher to the elementary students at St Mary’s School, about a show of her student’s work at the GoodBean. When it came down to the final preparations, she had to step aside as her kids got the gig to create dragons for this year’s parade, and Betsy Moore, who teaches the kids in grades 8-12, got the space for her St Mary’s High School art students instead. Naturally I was thrilled to see beautiful hearts galore from Betsy’s students come in to hang on the walls, and was really looking forward to seeing the dragons created and performed by Tami’s younger kids.
