Driven to Abstraction exhibit explores the skillful composition of rich color and exciting texture. Accomplished abstract painters, Alx Fox and Virginia Andrade are featured in this exhibit.

Alx Fox is an abstract expressionist painter who works in acrylic. She is driven by her passion for self-expression using bold colors and distinctive textures. She studied art, photography, and design at Barat College, Lake Forest, Ill. focusing on experimental art. She was President of the Southern Oregon Society of Artists from January 2012 through 2014. Her work is in private collections worldwide and has been showcased in many national shows. She resides in Southern Oregon. Alx will be teaching a workshop

Main Gallery exhibit: Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Eleanor Erskine, Alx Fox, Zelpha Hutton, Keith Johnson, and Dan Tilden

Exhibit date: September 29 – November 10, 2017

Artists in this exhibit explore the classical idea of the elements: earth, water, fire, and wind. Described as the simplest essential parts of all things, the four elements have fascinated artists throughout history. Printmaker Eleanor Erskine, sculptor Dan Tilden, and abstract painters Alx Fox, Zelpha Hutton, and Keith Johnson uniquely create artwork reflecting this concept of the natural world.

Eleanor H. Erskine received a BFA in Painting/Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute and a MFA in Printmaking with special focus in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has taught at Maine College of Art,

MYSTERIOUS CREATURES: James Deeb, Justin Diggle, and Jud Turner August 5 – September 16, 2016 Reception: Friday, August 19, 5–8pm

“Acrophobia,” by James Deeb

This exhibit features Illinois painter James Deeb, Utah printmaker Justin Diggle, and Eugene sculptor Jud Turner. Inspired by German Expressionism, James Deeb’s thickly textured oil paintings provide a dark satirical commentary on everyday life. Modern society’s pervasive use of surveillance is the central theme of the hauntingly stark black and white etchings of Justin Diggle. Jud Turner uses found objects, welded steel, and re-purposed items to create eerily beautiful assemblage sculptures which reflect the exhilarations and anxieties of industrialized society.

The Southern Oregon Society of Artists July Meeting will be held July 25 at the Medford Public Library starting at 6:30 pm. This is our Membership Art Critique and all members are invited to bring a piece of their own work for a professional evaluation and critique. The Artist critiquing will be Alx Fox.
