About the author: I begin my watercolor paintings with an idea and a drawing. I build the painting layer by layer, drawing lines and shapes, looking for rhythm and feeling. My color sense is a reflection of my childhood in New Mexico fused with colors of my home in the Northwest. My goal is to go beyond the surface to find joy, wonder and a bit of mystery. I have shown my works in galleries, juried, group and solo shows in Washington, Oregon, Montana and New Mexico. My paintings are in private collections in the west, New York and Norway. To view examples of Peggy's work or to make contact with the artist, please visit her listing at the Southern Oregon Artists Resource.Alla Prima, an Italian word which means getting a painting done in one session or before the painting dries. One Session Painting! Greetings! Today’s painting was an exercise in “getting in done – now!” To explain, I usually work my paintings over multiple sessions. In between, the painting is allowed to dry. Furthermore, my mind […] The post Alla Prima; Day 19, Cappuccino V8: #30paintingsin30days appeared first on Margaret Stermer-Cox. About the author:I woke this morning with the feeling that something had changed. The air felt a little crisper, the sky looked a little darker and I could smell the earthy scent of leaves scattered on the ground in the woods. Yes, this is the feeling of fall, my favorite time of year! To celebrate the season, this year I am offering a September workshop that includes painting outdoors with a focus on Composition. An important element in a painting is a good compostion which includes line, balance, movement, abstract form and many other details that are needed to create a great… The post Composition ~ The Foundation of a Painting appeared first on Stefan Baumann – The Grand View: Paintings by Stefan Baumann. On Saturday, I participated in Ashland Paint Out, a plein-air-painting competition (though it was all very convivial) that sent local artists out into North Mountain and Lithia parks. Our mission was to capture the landscape, colors and visions of these world-class parks and […] Continue reading Ashland Paint Out: A Celebration of Arts and Parks By Stefan Baumann, 172 contributed posts

About the author:“Ashland Barn” by Stefan Baumann Last week I was traveling in Medford, Oregon, prepared to paint with my brushes, paints, and canvases in my truck, when I took an unexpected turn off the freeway onto a quiet country road. It had been raining and a magnificent cloud formation with impressive effects of light covered the sky. I drove by an old pear orchard, and noticed a beautiful pear tree covered with blossoms that had an old barn as a backdrop. As I came closer to the tree, the sky opened and a beam of sunlight lit up the metal… The post Be Prepared to Paint appeared first on Stefan Baumann – The Grand View: Paintings by Stefan Baumann. A landscape painting on the wall is the best therapy for those of us who feel more at home in nature than indoors. I’ve also found that a still life can calm and inspire, and a […] Continue reading At Home with Art By Silvia Trujillo, 308 contributed posts

It’s a big change for me. I’ve spent all of my life on the west coast and the past seven years in Oregon, and I love those places so much I thought I’d never leave. But recent visits to […] Continue reading My Southwestern Sabbatical By Stefan Baumann, 172 contributed posts

About the author: “Yellowstone Geyser, Primary Sketch” by Stefan Baumann Three Keys to Plein Air Success, Inspiration, Composition & Application, Part 2 Inspiration As demonstrated by painting a geyser in Yellowstone National Park, an artist must first be inspired by an idea, feeling or vision of what he wants to communicate with the viewer about the scene or location before applying any paint to the canvas. The source of inspiration may be the effect of light in the scene, or a feeling created by the lighting or the time of day, or it might come from several objects in a location that… The post Painting A Geyser in Yellowstone Park, Part 2 appeared first on Stefan Baumann – The Grand View: Paintings by Stefan Baumann. About the author: “Yellowstone Geyser, Opus 1” by Stefan Baumann Three Keys to Plein Air Success ~ Inspiration, Composition & Color Application, Part 1 When I begin a painting on location, my main objective is to capture the subject in as little time as possible, and when painting a geyser, the pressure to paint fast is even greater. Painting a geyser like one in Yellowstone Park depicted in “Yellowstone Geyser, Opus 1” is quite a challenge, as it only erupts every 12 hours and the burst of water and steam lasts only 2-3 minutes. Capturing the essence of the geyser blowing upwards into… The post Painting a Geyser in Yosemite National Park, Part 1 appeared first on Stefan Baumann – The Grand View: Paintings by Stefan Baumann.
