ART REVEALING THE GUNFIRE EPIDEMIC. MAKE A BOX. SEND IT IN. IT COUNTS. Back to School with The Soul Box Project Nobody likes to hear school and gun in the same sentence. Schools spent a lot of time and energy preparing for the worst. Like teaching new words to Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: “Lockdown. Lockdown. Lock the door. Shut the lights off, say no more. Go behind the desk and hide. Wait until it’s safe inside. Lockdown. Lockdown. It’s all done. Now it’s time to have some fun…” Or what this teacher says in a note accompanying a delivery of Soul Boxes: Of course, the stories that haunt us most are about the heartbreaking shootings that actually happen. But there are also stories about action. For instance, over the past eight months we’ve watched the Parkland, FL students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School build a movement out Continue reading Art Revealing the Gunfire Epidemic. About the author: There is an art to every practice, activism included. It’s what distinguishes the innovative from the routine, the elegant from the mundane. One thing that can help the “art of activism” is applying an artistic aesthetic tactically, strategically, and organizationally. The practice of artistic activism has only accelerated in recent times, as savvy organizers learn to use the increasingly mediated political terrain of signs and symbols, stories and spectacles to their advantage. From Jesus’ parables to the Tea Party’s protests, working artfully makes activism effective.Until now there has not been a singular space to share, discuss and analyze tactics and strategies of artistic activism. There has not been a place where researchers across a range of disciplines can gather to share their investigations and their challenges, a place where skilled practitioners in artistic activism can share their expertise and cultivate new tactics through cross-disciplinary collaboration. The Center for Artistic Activism fills this important need. Visit CAA's website HERE. The School for Creative Activism went to Barcelona to work with activists working on access to medicines. A few weeks after Michael Brown’s death rocked residents in and around Ferguson, Missouri, a small printshop in St. Louis took action. The graphic design studio, dubbed Firecracker Press, began hand printing posters emblazoned with the words “Promote peace in St. Louis.” Amidst protests and heightened police presence in the city, the posters were made available to customers free of charge. Not surprisingly, the shop “sold out” of the wood type creations, though the print continues to live on in photos across sites like Twitter and Instagram. “Tell the world you support the debate that’s happening in Ferguson, MO and in the St. Louis region,” Firecracker wrote on its website. “Issues of inequality touch everyone… some more than others. Making posters is our small way of sharing our voice.” Firecracker began offering its “Peace Posters” online, charging only for shipping and handling. “FedEx got its cut,” Firecracker owner Eric Continue reading Artists Prove SocialValue of Art in Ferguson, St. Louis By Southern Oregon Artists Resource, 2007 contributed posts

July 13, 1-2pm at Art Presence Art Center in Jacksonville, activist/artist Catie Faryl will talk about “luminosity” in light of the need for transparency and truth and what art and satire can reveal. “Afterglow,” by Catie Faryl The aspect of creating art as political and social satire is one of many paths to truth since it can reveal hidden or unacknowledged aspects of society and what is communicated or not, as well as what we need to consider and change. Art can also serve as a relief to the stress of political and economic anxieties by reducing the grandiosity of our problems and looking at things with fresh eyes and light. Two of the paintings Catie will exhibit in the July “Luminosity” show at Art Presence are from her short written piece – “A Trip to Cynbalta: A Story of Community.” After a presentation of this body of Continue reading Catie Faryl “Luminosity” Art Talk By Southern Oregon Artists Resource, 2007 contributed posts

Palestinian artists of the second half of the twentieth century, when interviewed, sometimes speak of being the first to do this or that, or that theirs was the first Palestinian one-artist exhibition, etc. The trauma of the Nakba caused an absence in knowledge. Closer study reveals that, despite this perceived chasm in the continuity of Palestinian painting and sculpture, there were precious connections between the two halves of the twentieth century in Palestinian art history that were so traumatically divided.
