Vision Quilt Images for Atlanta and Boulder Mass Shootings

Atlanta 2021 by Nancy Bardos

Nancy Bardos Vision Quilt images for the Atlanta and Boulder Mass Shootings. This is an instance of an artist’s artmaking for the sake of acknowledging and documenting important and shattering events as well as a recognition and honoring of the innocent people who became the victims. Perhaps there is a healing of sorts, too.

Art Revealing the Gunfire Epidemic. Make a Box. Send It In. It Counts.

The Soul Box Project

ART REVEALING THE GUNFIRE EPIDEMIC. MAKE A BOX. SEND IT IN. IT COUNTS. Back to School with The Soul Box Project Nobody likes to hear school and gun in the same sentence. Schools spent a lot of time and energy preparing for the worst. Like teaching new words to Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: “Lockdown. Lockdown. Lock the door. Shut the lights off, say no more. Go behind the desk and hide. Wait until it’s safe inside. Lockdown. Lockdown. It’s all done. Now it’s time to have some fun…” Or what this teacher says in a note accompanying a delivery of Soul Boxes:

Of course, the stories that haunt us most are about the heartbreaking shootings that actually happen. But there are also stories about action. For instance, over the past eight months we’ve watched the Parkland, FL students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School build a movement out

Artists Prove SocialValue of Art in Ferguson, St. Louis

Promote Peace in St Louis poster in St Louis, MO 2014

A few weeks after Michael Brown’s death rocked residents in and around Ferguson, Missouri, a small printshop in St. Louis took action. The graphic design studio, dubbed Firecracker Press, began hand printing posters emblazoned with the words “Promote peace in St. Louis.”

Amidst protests and heightened police presence in the city, the posters were made available to customers free of charge. Not surprisingly, the shop “sold out” of the wood type creations, though the print continues to live on in photos across sites like Twitter and Instagram. “Tell the world you support the debate that’s happening in Ferguson, MO and in the St. Louis region,” Firecracker wrote on its website. “Issues of inequality touch everyone… some more than others. Making posters is our small way of sharing our voice.”

Firecracker began offering its “Peace Posters” online, charging only for shipping and handling. “FedEx got its cut,” Firecracker owner Eric

In an email to the Huffington Post, Ai analyzed the culture of “self-censorship” at play in China’s art world, drawing a line between the government’s actions and an old Chinese saying, which translates to “killing the chicken to scare the monkey.” The essay is reprinted in full below.

Catie Faryl “Luminosity” Art Talk

"Afterglow," by Catie Faryl

July 13, 1-2pm at Art Presence Art Center in Jacksonville, activist/artist Catie Faryl will talk about “luminosity” in light of the need for transparency and truth and what art and satire can reveal.

“Afterglow,” by Catie Faryl

The aspect of creating art as political and social satire is one of many paths to truth since it can reveal hidden or unacknowledged aspects of society and what is communicated or not, as well as what we need to consider and change. Art can also serve as a relief to the stress of political and economic anxieties by reducing the grandiosity of our problems and looking at things with fresh eyes and light.

Two of the paintings Catie will exhibit in the July “Luminosity” show at Art Presence are from her short written piece – “A Trip to Cynbalta: A Story of Community.” After a presentation of this body of
