Steve and Sue Bennett Exhibiting at Toledo, Oregon's Annual Labor Day Weekend Art Walk

Jacksonville Artists Steve & Sue Bennett will be appearing at the 19th Annual Labor Day Weekend Art Walk and First Weekend  in Toledo, Oregon.

Sponsored by the Yaquina River Museum of Art, a 501(c)3 organization partnering with the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Every Labor Day weekend, the many artists who live and work in Toledo, Oregon open their doors to the public for the annual Toledo Art Walk. Several galleries and studios hold special receptions and events throughout the weekend.

Art Walk began in 1993 as a small show for three Toledo artists – Michael Gibbons, Douglas Haga, and Ivan Kelly – as an extension of Vistas and Vineyards in Corvallis.  When the inaugural show drew an unexpectedly large crowd, the founders decided to make it an annual event.  Attendance has grown steadily every year since and the event now draws thousands to Toledo each year.  Because most of the participating artists live and work full time in Toledo and several open their studios to the public, Art Walk has truly become an annual celebration of the community.  Many of the artists offer lectures and demonstrations, and the event offers a rare opportunity for the public to meet and personally talk with the artists.

This year’s line-up of artists promises a richly varied selection of high quality artwork.  Participating artists, studios and galleries this year include Gallery Michael Gibbons, Ivan Kelly Gallery, Caroll Loomis, Becky Miller Studio-Gallery, SolaLuna Studios, the Yaquina River Museum of Art, the Justice of the Peace Studio, and The Gallery on Main Street.

Each of the galleries will have maps available for the self-guided tour.  Hours are 10 am to 5 pm daily, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 1, 2 and 3, 2012.

More about these amazing and talented artists:

Back Bay, Pastel by Steve Bennett

“Back Bay”, Pastel by Steve Bennett

Steve Bennett

Steve Bennett has been composing pictures most of his life. He practiced dentistry in Bend, Oregon and enjoyed photography. From this compositional background, he began to study drawing, design, color, harmony and the other elements of fine art. He has been painting for over 25 years and considers himself fortunate to have studied with many of the finest instructors in the United States. He most frequently chooses to work in pastel because of its immediacy of expression: “The pigment is right here in my hand.” His strong designs and colors add to the excitement of each piece, as does the emotional intensity of painting on location. For Steve Bennett, art is another dimension to the joy of life.

For this show, Steve will be showing pastel paintings painted on a sanded surface with a toned under painting of watercolor and then pastel placed over this surface. This combines the quality of serendipity of the watercolor and the control of pastel. The subjects of the show will include local sites, as well as some of his favorite places in Oregon.

Thoughts that have helped me so far in life’s Pilgrimage:

– Stay curious about people and things! Every person has value.

– Keep and develop a sense of humor about life and be able to laugh at your self.

– Remember, the world is not about me.

– Stay fit enough to enjoy life and to challenge myself.

– My greatest help of all has been to trust and have faith in God.

Sue Bennett, Artist

Born in Oregon, I loved to draw from the time I remember.  I spent ten years studying art in college classes and national workshops.  Drawing led to basic design, which led to oil painting, which led to print making, which led to watercolor.  I currently work in watercolor and oil.  Instructors of special help are Millard Sheets, Bruce Butte, Richard McKinley, and Frank Webb.

Artist’s Statement

My paintings are portrayed with simplicity of shape and rich colors.  While making a painting, I get very involved with the medium.  I use both watercolor and oil to express beauty, mood and heart to take the viewer to a place of refreshment.  I want to be emotionally caught up from start to finish and like it best when I am slightly surprised by the end result.
