The Rogue Gallery & Art Center is the recipient of an $11,500 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation to fund their Elementary Arts Outreach Program Expansion. The Elementary Arts Outreach Program will benefit seven fifth grade classes from Jackson, Kennedy, Wilson and Washington Elementary Schools throughout the 2013-2014 school year with visual arts education including classroom visits by an artist educator and field trips to the Rogue Gallery & Art Center.

IMG_6269The Program began five years ago with one fifth grade class at Jackson Elementary in response to the lack of formal visual arts education in the elementary school curriculum. With the generous support of foundations and in partnership with the Medford Public School District, the Rogue Gallery & Art Center expanded the program in 2011 to impact three fifth grades, or 100 children. This fall, the non-profit arts center will expand the Elementary Arts Outreach further to reach over 200 children, teaching foundational art skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and art appreciation. The fifth grade students will learn a visual arts vocabulary to express feelings, ideas, and opinions about art presented during classroom visits and field trip art lessons throughout the school year.

Kennedy Elementary School Principal, Tom Etell, said, “We are thrilled that the arts outreach grant has been funded. The pressure on teachers to ensure students are proficient in reading and math continues to increase every year, so the arts, especially visual arts, are rarely taught in elementary schools in Oregon. Through this grant, our fifth graders are guaranteed to receive high quality arts instruction! Thank you so much!”

090The Elementary Arts Outreach Program is a success thanks to the quality artist educators who teach the program. The program is directed by Rogue Gallery & Art Center’s Education Director, Brooke Nuckles Gentekos and art lessons are taught by Amy Godard Navickas or “Miss Amy” as she is referred to by the fifth graders. Gentekos says, “Miss Amy is the heart of Elementary Arts Outreach. She helped develop the wonderful curriculum and brings years of experience as an artist educator to the classrooms and the Rogue Studio. Seeing her introduce the world of art to the Elementary Arts Outreach students each year is like pure magic!”

“Rogue Gallery & Art Center is helping to increase arts literacy throughout Jackson County by offering in-school arts education and field trips for elementary school students. OCF is impressed by Rogue Gallery’s commitment to arts education and is excited by the growth of this important program,” said Kathleen Cornett, Vice President of Grants & Programs, Oregon Community Foundation.
