Response to our letter of concern…

Thank you for contacting me to share your support for the arts. It is an honor to serve as your Senator, and I appreciate hearing from you.

Like you, I believe that the arts play a critical role in preserving and shaping our rich national culture, and I am proud of Oregon’s vibrant artistic communities. Every year, millions of Americans visit museums or art events and studies demonstrate a strong correlation between arts education and high levels of academic achievement. Furthermore, the arts employ nearly six million people and generate billions of dollars in economic activity every year.

I support funding for the arts, arts education, and artistic development. Last year, I sent a letter to Senate leadership urging increased funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, which provides critical resources for artists and educators across the country. I also voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which included $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts and state and regional arts organizations. As we begin work in the 112th Congress, please know I will continue to look for opportunities to support programs that provide resources and opportunities for our artists and art organizations.

Again, I appreciate your input.  I hope you will continue to send your observations and thoughts my way.
All my best,

Jeffrey A. Merkley
United States Senator

We hope this doesn’t cause anyone to feel that the arts don’t need advocates in Oregon. We only stay on top by hard work and impressive results, so keep up the great work, everyone! And send your own letter to our state representatives from the Americans for the Arts website – they make it easy to write one that’s relevant and addresses all the issues we care about.
