Artists from across the region are invited to paint the sights and scenes of the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, historic Downtown Hillsboro, including the Saturday Farmers’ Market, and—new this year—the scenic views of Árdíri Winery & Vineyards.

Event highlights include:

  • A Luncheon & Demo for Participating Artists hosted by Gamblin Artists Colors at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve from 12 – 2 pm on Friday, September 14th.
  • A Figurative “Quick Draw” Competition from 10 am to 12 pm on Saturday, September 15th with a historically themed, tableau vivant (or “living picture”) provided by Lavender’s Green Historic Clothing
  • A Reception and Award Ceremony on the East Lawn of the Walters Cultural Arts Center from 3 – 5 pm on Saturday, September 15th, catering by Claeys Catering and wine provided by Primrose & Tumbleweeds.

Painters can compete in three categories: Landscape, City Scene and Figurative Quick Draw, with cash prizes in each category. Local artist Eric Jacobsen will judge the competition. He is a professional plein air painter who regularly competes in plein air competitions throughout the Northwest, including taking first place in the Pacific Northwest Plein Air competition in 2011. Eric also teaches plein air painting workshops throughout the region and will be teaching a “Hillsboro Countryside Plein Air” workshop through the Sequoia Gallery + Studios in Hillsboro on September 8-9, 2012. Beginning to advanced students can spend two days painting, learning new techniques and receiving tips on creating an impressionistic painting. In partnership with Sequoia, participants in this workshop will receive a 10% discount on registration fees for Hillsboro Plein Air. To learn more about this workshop, go to

Painters ages 16 and up are welcome to participate. There is a $40.00 registration fee for artists who pre-register. Day-of registration will be $45.00.  All participating artists are invited to leave their works to be exhibited at the Walters Cultural Arts Center during the month of October.

The public is welcome! Watch the creative process at work at any of the painting locations and meet the artists at the Artists’ Reception and Award Ceremony.
