Empty Bowls fundraiserThe fifth annual Empty Bowls event in Grants Pass, Oregon will be held at Parkway Christian Center located at 229 NE Beacon Drive in Grants Pass on Monday, October 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Guests choose a handcrafted bowl and are then served a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests keep the bowl as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in our own community, as well as in the world.

The Empty Bowls fundraiser benefits Options for Southern Oregon and the Josephine County Food Bank. Tickets are available at Options for Southern Oregon, 1215 SW ‘G’ Street, Grants Pass or purchase online at (click Events and Fundraisers; then click on Empty Bowls link), or call Ellen Johnson at 541.476.2373. Tickets are $25 each and should be purchased in advance.

“We so appreciate our local restaurants who donate gourmet soups and homemade bread for this special night,” says Ellen Johnson, Options’ Development Director. “This is a night to honor those who are hungry and/or homeless in our community. If you can’t attend, please consider purchasing a ticket for a client to attend.”

Options’ residential clients, Grants Pass High School Ceramics, and local potters join every year to make bowls for this event. “Watching people choose the bowl that “speaks to them” is a delightful experience,” says Johnson.” Beautiful bowls are being donated daily from local artists like Roxanne Hunnicutt, Gwen Childs, Patricia Ritchey, and many others.

All proceeds from the Empty Bowls event benefit the hungry in Josephine County. Proceeds from last year’s event provided more than 20,000 pounds of food for our community.

Options and the Josephine County Food Bank are 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving thousands of children, adults and families in Josephine County. Options is Josephine County’s mental health provider and serves more than 4,000 out of 16,600 eligible individuals in our community. Josephine County Food Bank has been providing food to more than 12,000 individuals per month.

Empty Bowls is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding, and informed, year- round action to alleviate hunger. It is observed each October in recognition of the founding of the UN Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1945. The first World Food Day was in 1981. Eleanor Roosevelt said more than once that she felt that the first human right—the great human right—was food.

Rogue Community College is a sponsor for this year’s event. Please join us and bring your voice to the table to help alleviate hunger in Josephine County. Our local event is an opportunity to discuss food and hunger in our community. Learn more about how to keep our community healthy.

Johnson says, “Empty Bowls is one of our most favorite events during the year. It’s very powerful to hear the voices of experience speak to how programs such as the Food Bank and Options have literally saved people’s lives. It’s a wonderful, emotional event.” Come and learn how YOU can be the change you wish to see in the world!
