Empty Bowls Announces Sixth Annual Event in Grants Pass

The sixth Empty Bowls event in Grants Pass, Oregon will again be held at Parkway Christian Center located at 229 NE Beacon Drive in Grants Pass on Monday, October 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Guests choose a handcrafted bowl and are then served a simple meal of soup and bread in a handmade bowl they select and keep as a reminder of hunger in our community.

This year Options is collaborating with the Gospel Rescue Mission to host the annual Empty Bowls event. The two agencies see a great need to provide food to an increasing number of people in our community who are homeless or have lost jobs. “Many of our clients access the soup kitchen and it could be the only meal of their day,” says Ellen Johnson, Development Director for Options.

This year ALL net proceeds from Empty Bowls will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul’s soup kitchen located at 757 S.E. Seventh Street in Grants Pass. The donation from Empty Bowls will help provide food throughout the winter so that their other funding can be put into operating costs. Karla McCafferty, Executive Director of Options says, “We have long been community partners with the Gospel Rescue Mission, working together to address individual, family and community issues such as homelessness, hunger and poverty.  It is wonderful that we are both working to help another partner, St. Vincent Paul, through the Empty Bowls event.  In  conjunction with our other public and private supporters, Empty Bowls is truly an example of our community coming together to address a very real and desperate need.”

“We so appreciate our local restaurants who donate gourmet soups and homemade bread for this special night,” says Ellen Johnson, Options’ Development Director. “This is a night to honor those who are hungry and/or homeless in our community. If you can’t attend, please consider purchasing a ticket for a client to attend.”

Options’ residential clients, Grants Pass High School Ceramics, and local artists like Roxanne Hunnitcutt, join every year to make bowls for this event. “Watching people choose the bowl that “speaks to them” is a delightful experience. It’s a powerful and emotional event, ” says Johnson.

Options is a nonprofit serving thousands of children, adults and families in Josephine County. As Josephine County’s Mental Health Provider, they provide services to approximately 5,000 children, adults and families. Nearly 18,000 individuals are eligible for mental health services in our community.

This year’s event sponsors are Premier West Bank, J. D. Fulwiler Insurance Company, and Bank of the Cascades. Please join the Empty Bowls event and help alleviate hunger in Josephine County. Our local event is an opportunity to discuss food and hunger in our community. Learn more about how to keep our community healthy.

“We are very pleased that Options and the Gospel Rescue Mission are working together in support of St. Vincent de Paul.  They are a vital source of hope and support for so many of the vulnerable people in our community,” says McCafferty.
