Third Annual Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit Exhibition

Third Annual Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit Exhibition

Third Annual Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit Exhibition is honored to bring together an international juried exhibition of mosaic art from September 19 to October 26, 2016 at The Center for Visual Arts, Thorndike and Retzlaff Galleries, Art Building, Southern Oregon University.  The exhibition will be open to the public 10-4, Monday through Friday through October 26. This extraordinary show will be on display for over a month and will coincide with the Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit to be held October 6-9, 2016. The galleries will be open extended hours during the CMA Summit weekend.

Third Annual Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit Exhibition : The Road Past Horseshoe Bend, triptych, Mosaic art by Rebecca Cambell
The Road Past Horseshoe Bend, Tryptich, by Rebecca  Campbell
This juried exhibition invites us to enter the vast and creative world of both ancient and contemporary mosaic art. The works surprise us as we view traditional and non-traditional executed fine art mosaics which,  incorporate innovative subject matter, techniques and material, allowing the mosaic to burst forth with subtle or aggressive movement, drawing us into the subject and illuminating clarity of the art and our own vision.

The mosaicist assembles small bits of stone, glass, pottery, and/or repurposed material and assembles them into an image, a feeling, a spirit, and a representation. Mosaic artists chop, cut, hammer and nip to create beauty out of those bits. It’s a beautiful order, a deliberate order, an order of the heart, of dreams, of unending skill and patience. These artists represent the world in ways that have never before been seen.
The artists represented in this exhibition have discovered their own artistic “voice” and use mosaic art to express their unique vision of the world around them. The mosaics presented in this exhibit are a delight to the eye and an inspiration to the soul.

Come join us for First Friday Art Walk on October 7, 5:00 to 8:00 PM at SOU Art Building for a chance to view this extraordinary show, meet the artists, purchase a piece of original mosaic art to take home and enjoy a little light refreshment.  The trolley will be running from downtown Ashland and the Railroad District to the SOU campus throughout First Friday.  Park your car on campus and enjoy the trolley art experience!

Southern Oregon Society of Artists Monthly Meeting: SOSA Work-in-Progress Critique by Dixie Kinser

The Southern Oregon Society of Artists (SOSA) holds its regular monthly meeting at the Medford Public Library on September 26, 2016 at 6:30 pm for a work-in-progress critique, refreshments and in-person social networking. Meeting / Critique starts at 7.  All members are encouraged to bring in a work-in-progress.

This month is our SOSA Work-in-Progress Critique by Dixie Kinser.  Members are encouraged to bring their work early.

Dixie first became enamored with art by dyeing silk. She loved to see how colors bloomed into beautiful patterns. In the 90s, she began another romance, this time with watercolor. Again, colors blended with beautiful results.

Since then she loves experimenting with color, shapes, composition and values. Then she just had to try abstract.

At present, her work is primarily abstract and mixed media collage using watercolor and acrylic.

For most of her career, Dixie worked in education as an administrator and teacher; however she finds art even more fulfilling.

September 16 – October 14, 2016

Reception Date September 16, 5:00-8:00 pm

Using a variety of fiber art techniques and little nuggets of physics knowledge, Ashland artist Nancy Pagani explores planets, moons, and meteors.

Local artist Nancy Pagani creates works in fiber on the theme of outer space. Images inspired by planets, moons, quarks, black holes, and meteors are sewn into her quilted fiber works. Nancy has worked with fabric since she was a child, and her passion for creating with fabric includes surface design, quilting, and weaving. Commercial fabrics as well as fabrics that she has dyed and painted are incorporated into the artwork. Her fiber works are playful, lively, and colorful.
