Southern Oregon Guild May 2023 Event & Classes

Spend time with a Mother or caregiver in your life while enjoying fine art, local wine, homemade chocolates, and live music by Terry D. Davis. Let her pick out a gift from the variety of local art and fine crafts on display, or treat her to a gift certificate. In-person class sign-ups will be available for our upcoming Citrus Beeswax Candle workshop held on May 20. Attend together and make candles to enjoy and take home!  Our Mother’s Day event is FREE with no prior registration needed. Donations are always appreciated. The Guild Gallery & Art Center is located in the historic Kerby Belt Building at 24353 Redwood Highway Kerby, OR 97531.

Are you looking for an opportunity to learn a fun new craft this spring? We invite you to join us at the Guild Gallery & Art Center on Saturday May 20 from 1-3pm to learn how to make Citrus Beeswax Candles with Alyssa Babin of Fireheart Candles. During this 2 hour hands-on workshop led by Guild Member and local artisan Alyssa Babin, you’ll make and take home your own citrus beeswax candle using high-quality organic ingredients. Beeswax doesn’t contain any toxic chemicals, and because there are no additives or chemicals, beeswax burns clean and doesn’t produce unsightly black soot. When burned, beeswax candles produce negative ions which bind with air pollutants (positive ions) and drop to the floor, removing them from the air and leaving it cleaner!

All candles will be made inside a large citrus peel of your choosing which emits an uplifting natural citrus scent when used! Learn how DIY candle-making can be easily adapted to your own unique tools that you have available at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to treat Mom or a caregiver to the class for Mother’s Day and make a candle together!

Class fees are on a sliding scale $35-$55 and include all materials. When you register, please honestly self-select your contribution. If the sliding scale would be a hardship and you’d like to request a scholarship, please send an email to [email protected] or call us at 541-592-5019.

ABOUT ALYSSA BABIN

Guild Member, Alyssa Babin, is a poet, musician, independent parent, and candle maker currently living on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast. Alyssa was inspired to create her business, Fireheart Candles, when her child Alex was still in the womb. Driven by a desire to express herself creatively and spend as much time as possible with Alex, Fireheart Candles was born! Fireheart, Alex’s middle name, was chosen by Alyssa’s niece and means fire and love all at once–a metaphor for the warmth and beauty that candles offer us. Alyssa makes every candle by hand, beginning with mixing and pouring concrete for each container. After curing, they are then hand painted with her unique marbling technique and laser etched with her own designs created by Adobe Illustrator and laser etching robots. Local beeswax is then mixed with organic essential oils and poured into each unique container to create her one-of-a-kind candles! Every candle she makes is infused with love and the special bond between mother and child is felt! To learn more about Alyssa and Fireheart Candles, visit www.fireheartcandles.com. Alyssa’s beeswax candles, in various sizes and scents, are also for sale at the Guild Gallery & Art Center.

Oregon Fringe Festival Announces 2022 Festival Dates!

The Oregon Fringe Festival Announces 2022 Festival Dates!

Mark your calendars! The Oregon Fringe Festival is thrilled to announce that next year’s festival will take place Wednesday, April 27 – Sunday, May 1, 2022.

After a long break from gathering in person to enjoy live performances, the Oregon Fringe Festival is excited to reintroduce live programming while continuing to offer online programming for festival-goers around. Last year, over 40 artists ranging from students to local artists, and even national/international artists participated, providing viewers with over 50 opportunities to engage and interact. As curating and planning begin to take place, the Oregon Fringe Festival is confident in being able to provide similar programming, if not more, for 2022.

“This year’s festival will be special in that we are able to provide content to our local community again that has always enjoyed our live performances, in addition to our not so local community that really flourished as a result of going mostly online last year. Especially for artists, this will be great in providing more accessibility when it comes to locating a platform to present their creative work,’ Paige Gerhard, Director of the Oregon Fringe Festival explains.

While applications to present at the festival haven’t been released quite yet, updates and more information can be found at oregonfringefestival.org.

About the Oregon Fringe Festival:

Each spring, the Oregon Center for the Arts produces the Oregon Fringe Festival (OFF), a multi-day event bringing together emerging creators and real-world artistic practitioners to share their respective experiences and to engage with each other’s work. The festival’s mission is simple: to provide a boundary-breaking platform for free expression and to celebrate unconventional art and unconventional spaces.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend our events. If you are a person with a disability who requires accommodation(s) in order to participate in this festival, then please contact Disability Resources at [email protected] in advance.

The OFF is committed to providing a boundary-breaking platform for free expression that amplifies the voices of those who are all too unrepresented in the creative arts industry. A lens focusing on equity, diversity, and inclusion will filter our selection process for all projects submitted.

Southern Oregon University and the Oregon Fringe Festival are located within the ancestral homelands of the Shasta, Takelma, and Latgawa peoples who lived here since time immemorial. These Tribes were displaced during rapid Euro-American colonization, the Gold Rush, and armed conflict between 1851 and 1856. In the 1850s, the discovery of gold and settlement brought thousands of Euro-Americans to their lands, leading to warfare, epidemics, starvation, and villages being burned. In 1853 the first of several treaties were signed, confederating these Tribes and others together – who would then be referred to as the Rogue River Tribe. These treaties ceded most of their homelands to the United States, and in return, they were guaranteed a permanent homeland reserved for them. At the end of the Rogue River Wars in 1856, these Tribes and many other Tribes from western Oregon were removed to the Siletz Reservation and the Grand Ronde Reservation. Today, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon (https://www.grandronde.org) and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (http://www.ctsi.nsn.us/) are living descendants of the Takelma, Shasta, and Latgawa peoples of this area. We encourage YOU to learn about the land you reside on, and to join us in advocating for the inherent sovereignty of Indigenous people.

Reception for Main Gallery and Community Gallery Exhibit

Friday, May 17, 5:30 – 8:00 pm

Cammy Davis Give Me One Reason

Cammy Davis Give Me One Reason

Main Gallery – “Surface and Structures: Paintings by Cammy Davis and Sculpture by Nadine Gay”

May 10–June 21, 2019

The Surface and Structures exhibit features abstract artist Cammy Davis and sculptor Nadine Gay. Cammy Davis paints bold large abstract acrylic paintings. Nadine Gay is a multi-media artist who creates whimsical and contemplative ceramic figurative sculptures. The exhibit is a juxtaposition of large, textured, color enriched canvases with sculpture that is figurative, spiritual, and at times delicate. Each artists’ work is beautifully complemented by the other.

Cammy Davis is a Jacksonville artist who has been featured at fine art galleries between Seattle and Palm Springs. She has developed art tutorial videos and music art videos. Cammy studied fine art at the University of Idaho and holds a degree in Interior Design from Bellevue College in Washington. Cammy has been deeply influenced by her childhood experiences of growing up in the woods. She spent her youth making sword fern teepees and treehouses from material of the land. The lifestyle was simple and creative. Her youth instilled in her a resourceful and creative spirit that is present in her abstract paintings. She resides in Jacksonville.

Nadine Gay was born and raised in France and came to the United States in the 1970’s. She holds a Bachelors of Fine Art from the Pratt Institute. Nadine has taught art in various programs from kindergarten to college, prisons to psychiatric hospitals, and classes for adults. In 2016, she retired from teaching art and moved to the Rogue Valley to concentrate on her art. She describes her work as a playful conversation between her dreams, images and the materials she uses to create. Her work is often process oriented, as Nadine explains, “Stories emerge, the child in me delights in what comes to life. My work connects me with a fantasy world, a waking dream-space.” She has exhibited in France and throughout the US.

Community Gallery New Exhibit – “Finding Form: Paintings by Katy Cauker “

April 19 – May 31, 2019

Katy Cauker_A Favorite Place

Katy Cauker’s paintings explore the shape and form of water and the farmlands that surround her home in the Rogue Valley. Katy has expressionistic, lively, vigorous brushstrokes in her paintings of waterways and open fields. She paints in acrylic, oil, and gouache. She states, “Many of my paintings explore the shape and form of water, and by extension, now, the agricultural lands that surround my home in the Rogue Valley. Searching for the shapes that best express my relationship to water and our communal and individual responsibilities to preserve our environment and protect our water is at the core of my world as an artist.” Katy resides in Jacksonville.

Refreshments from Harry & David will be served at the reception.

The Rogue Gallery & Art Center is a non-profit community art center, founded in 1960 to promote and support the arts in the Rogue Valley. May Spotlight Exhibits

Hanson Howard

Sue Springer, ceramic sculpture & Robert Koch, paintings

Sue Springer creates quirky ceramic sculptures, which are mostly figurative, with a whimsy and freedom of unexpected combinations. Dreams, imagination and wonder combine with a response to the current world to tell the stories of these figures.  Sue, founder of the former Illahe Studios and Gallery now lives and works in Seattle, Washington.

Gestural strokes and spontaneous marks collide with color blocks in Robert Koch’s narrative vignettes. Often prompted by found photographs, Koch takes the liberty to make his subjects humans or creatures inhabiting the same world. Having the appearance of quickness and even naiveté, Koch’s deft drawing skills mean each mark is playful and intentional at the same time
