Fall Fiber Fun Series with Iris Chinook Weekends: November 11, 12, 18, 19 at the Guild
We invite you to join us at the Guild this fall to delve into THREE fun fiber techniques in our Fall Fiber Fun Series led by Iris Chinook. Discover the deep joy in making everyday things with your own hands and walk away with the knowledge of how to successfully make cordage, knit, crochet, read patterns, and correct mistakes. During this 4-part beginner class series in the month of November, you’ll learn and understand the process of working with different fibers to create 3 separate projects: A dishcloth, granny-square, and basic cordage. Seek inspiration to take these traditional techniques and create personalized clothing, scarves, blankets, purses, and more!
Iris Chinook has been exploring and delighting in the creation of textiles for over 50 years. She loves making useful, beautiful things that she can utilize in her everyday life. Primarily identifying as a Spinner (making her own yarn for her projects), she is looking forward to sharing her wealth of experience with you.
November 11, 11am-1pm • Crochet Like a Granny!: In this class you’ll receive information about different materials and projects appropriate for crochet and encouragement to explore the basic “granny-square” pattern to see all of the extraordinary uses to which these basic, “starter” squares can be put! You will learn how to choose the right size crochet hook, tie yarn, chain stitches and join together to create a foundation circle, and learn single and double crochet stitches. After finishing classyou will know the fundamental building blocks of crochet to create anything that inspires you, such as pure art sculptures, wall hangings, toys, or etc.
November 12, 11am-1pm • Knit Shirley’s Gourmet Dishcloth: Knitting is an extremely versatile craft for making clothing as well as home accessories, pet coats, blankets, etc. In this class, you will gain the confidence to make your way through basic knitting instructions to facilitate honing of your skills and an increased awareness of different fibers, their properties, etc. You will learn how to cast-on, make a knit stitch, yarn-over increase and decrease, understand how to read basic knitting instructions, and which end of the circular needles to use! Iris will also show how to use a darning needle to tie-off and weave-in a long tail of yarn that is resistant to unraveling with the heavy use a washcloth receives.
November 18, 11am-1pm • Lucet Cordage: What did we ever use before plastic twine and commercially produced ropes were invented? The ancient art of cordage has allowed the evolution of our species to make everyday useful items. In this class, Iris will discuss the origin and history of the Lucet, an ancient Viking tool and technique of making strong, durable string and cordage that does not unravel when cut. You will learn what kind of materials make good cordage, how to start the cord on the Lucet tool, how to keep going until you have the length you want, how to tie-off yarn, and brainstorm on ways to use your finished string. It’s a great way to use up assorted scraps of yarn, doesn’t require a pattern, and is highly portable.
November 19, 11am-2pm: Final class drop-in opportunity to ask questions and receive help troubleshooting problems with Iris. This final session will be three hours from 11am-2pm and is optional.
Individual Classes are $30/each or $80 to attend the whole series. Classes are appropriate for ages 14 and up. Material Fees are separate and payable directly to the teacher upon arrival in CASH. You get to keep all materials provided to you, which include knitting/crochet needles, fiber, etc. If you would like to request a scholarship due to financial hardship, please send an email to [email protected] or call us at 541-592-5019.

Art in the Vineyard: A Guild Gallery at Bridgeview The art of Charles Churchill and Miri Admoni On display now through November 27!
Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday September 30 for the opening of our fall exhibit at Art in the Vineyard, our art gallery at Bridgeview Winery in Cave Junction! The work of Charles Churchill & Miri Admoni will be on display until November 27. Bridgeview is now open from 12-7pm!
Charles Churchill has been a sculptor for over 4 decades and a teacher for 26. His passion for art evolved from a love of jazz, leading him to beat poetry, abstract art, and even motorcycles. In 1989, he graduated art school at Sonoma State University and began showing and selling his art. Abstract assemblage and light sculptures make up a large portion of his body of work, made almost entirely of disregarded industrial scraps. By using found wood, glass, and metals, he celebrates and honors the materials made from our planet’s resources. Charles has taught art and curated exhibitions at Sonoma State University and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. He has also shared the art of assemblage to children of all ages in various schools and Head Start programs in Northern California. Charles was the August 2021 Featured Artist at Central Art Gallery in Medford, OR and currently has 4 pieces on display at the Guild Gallery & Art Center. To see more of his work, visit www.charleschurchillsculptor.com.
Miri Admoni (b. 1954 in Tel Aviv, Israel) is a mixed media, glass, and jewelry artist, who shares her life between Israel and the USA. Arts and crafts have always been a part of Miri’s life since childhood. Her formal education was in graphic design, where she worked as a freelance designer and producer of unique recycled paper products and specialized in packaging. During 2004-2010 Miri studied various glass techniques, and from 2011-2012 she studied metalsmithing in a private studio and started to create jewelry with glass. Nature has always been the greatest source of inspiration. Initially, Miri was inspired by her surroundings in Israel, the rich and diverse nature scenes between the Mediterranean Sea and the Judean desert. That led to the creation of the Alchemy glass series and the collaboration with Bedouin women artists. Now Miri lives and works from her home studio in Selma OR, where she continues to explore her relationship with nature. To view or purchase her work, visit her Saatchi site!

TWO GENERATIONS: JOE FEDDERSEN & WENDY RED STAR
On View: January 16 – March 14, 2020
Opening Reception: January 16th, 5:00pm – 7:00pm
EXHIBITION STATEMENT
This exhibition presents the work of two Northwest Indigenous artists who work across media and whose work responds, on their own terms, to historic and contemporary misrepresentations of Native Americans. Joe Feddersen, born in 1953, is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and has exhibited internationally since the early 1980’s. As a printmaker, basket maker, ceramicist and glass artist, Feddersen combines contemporary materials with Native iconography to create powerful and evocative works that explore the interrelationships between urban symbols and Indigenous landscapes.
Wendy Red Star, born in 1981, was raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana. An avid researcher of archives and historical narratives, Red Star incorporates and recasts her research through photography, sculpture, video, fiber arts, and performance, offering new and unexpected perspectives on past, present, and future life. Her work is humorous, surreal, and often abrasive, yet deeply rooted in a celebration for Crow life.
JOE FEDDERSEN BIO:
Joe Feddersen, a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, lives and works in Omak, WA and was a faculty member at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA from 1989 until his retirement in 2009. His work was included in Weaving Past into Present: Experiments in Contemporary Native American Printmaking at the International Print Center, New York, Autumn 2015. He has been featured in numerous national exhibitions, including Continuum 12 Artists: Joe Feddersen, National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution at the George Gustav Heye Center, New York, NY, curated by Truman Lowe; Land Mark, Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture, Spokane, WA; and was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition and monograph, Vital Signs, organized in conjunction with Froelick Gallery and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University in Salem, OR
WENDY RED STAR BIO:
Artist Wendy Red Star works across disciplines to explore the intersections of Native American ideologies and colonialist structures, both historically and in contemporary society. Raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana, Red Star’s work is informed both by her cultural heritage and her engagement with many forms of creative expression, including photography, sculpture, video, fiber arts, and performance. An avid researcher of archives and historical narratives, Red Star seeks to incorporate and recast her research, offering new and unexpected perspectives in work that is at once inquisitive, witty and unsettling. Intergenerational collaborative work is integral to her practice, along with creating a forum for the expression of Native women’s voices in contemporary art.
Red Star has exhibited in the United States and abroad at venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Fondation Cartier pour l’ Art Contemporain, Domaine de Kerguéhennec, Portland Art Museum, Hood Art Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, among others. She served a visiting lecturer at institutions including Yale University, the Figge Art Museum, the Banff Centre, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Dartmouth College, CalArts, Flagler College, and I.D.E.A. Space in Colorado Springs. In 2017, Red Star was awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and in 2018 she received a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship. In 2019 Red Star will have her first career survey exhibition at the Newark Museum in Newark New Jersey.
Red Star holds a BFA from Montana State University, Bozeman, and an MFA in sculpture from University of California, Los Angeles. She lives and works in Portland, OR.
CURATOR MACK MCFARLAND BIO:
Mack McFarland is a cultural producer and has worked as Curator for Pacific Northwest College of Art since 2006. Currently McFarland is the Director of the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at PNCA. His exhibitions at PNCA have included commissioned projects of new works from tactical media practitioners Critical Art Ensemble, Eva and Franco Mattes, and Disorientalism. He has also curated a review of Luc Tuymans’s printed works, a group exhibit marking the centennial of John Cage’s birth, and a comprehensive look at the process of the comic journalist Joe Sacco. McFarland’s current question is how exhibitions and artworks can meaningfully link to our shared experience of existing together within the ongoing process of history.

Kate Geary – “In the Woods”
Kate Geary’s new show, “In the Woods”, opens on Friday, January 3, 2020, at The Photographer’s Gallery at the Ashland Art Center and runs through the end of February.
Kate’s focus in this show is on the amazing beauty and even humor in the small details of the natural world in the forest. So often the small is obscured by the magnificence of the scene, the towering redwood or roaring waterfall. To pause, to look downward and notice the patterns in decaying bark, the sensuous texture of exposed wood; the beauty of seed pods lying in verdant ground cover, reflections of fall color in a meandering stream, brings a new appreciation to the beauty of detail.

Featuring Justin Gordon
Justin Gordon is an artist and musician living in Ashland Oregon who enjoys traditional processes that harken back to the twentieth century before the digital world inundated us with images and sounds and facsimiles of real objects. He can be found driving around in a yellow seventies pick up snapping photos or playing his original songs with his band The Holy Mackerels around town when he is not at work as a carpenter and painter.
Show runs December through January.

Art du Jour Gallery’s December feature wall is a collaboration of winter celebration by participating artist members. Roy Musitelli photo 12-4-19
Art du Jour Gallery, 213 E. Main Street in Medford continues it’s seasonal exhibit with a celebration of our winter season. For Third Friday (December 20th, 5pm-8pm) we are planning a special Christmas event presented by harpist Kathy Yeoman and accompanied by vocalist Lynn Kunstman. Please go to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ArtduJourGallery) for any further updates.
Winter Wonderland Exhibit on Display Through Christmas
Our artists let their collective imaginations go free for this combined exhibit by participating AdJ members in offering our own visual representation of “Winter Wonderland”. We wish to take this time to thank our friends of the gallery for their support in 2019, and extend a warm invitation to the entire community to help us celebrate this magical time of the year on Third Friday.
Guest Artist Nancy Graham Returns to Help Art du Jour Usher in a New Year
Nancy Graham has always been passionate about art in all its forms and styles, as evidenced by the variety of subjects she likes to paint and the varied approach to each. She was always encouraged by her mother, who was a well-known artist in California and an art instructor at Dominican College in San Rafael a number of years ago. She paints only with watercolor these days and her current passion is teaching watercolor at Scrappy Craft in Phoenix, where her classes remain full year around. She tells us that the real thrill comes from the delight her students find when the composition comes together and there’s a sudden spurt of confidence. She pushes strong value shifts of light and dark, telling her students over and over, “The deeper the shadows, the stronger the light will be”.
Nancy Graham exhibit at Art du Jour December 2019. Image courtesy of the artist.
While teaching that there is more to a successful piece of art than the basic fundamentals of art theory, she likes to experiment with a variety of styles and approaches as evidenced by the selection of pieces that will be showing during December and January. Florals, landscapes, abstracts, still lifes and even a motorcycle engine are the subjects she’s chosen to show. She’s always excited to try something new, and is challenged by the possibilities that watercolor brings to her artwork. However, if one were to ask her what she likes to do best, she’d probably reply that she loves to paint the “close-ups” where she can use her small brushes to bring out the finest details of her subjects.
Nancy holds a secondary teaching credential and art degree from UC Davis, and is a member of the Southern Oregon Society of Artists, the Rogue Gallery, a past President of the Josephine County Artists Association and a juried member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.

2019 Winter Art Classes and Workshops
Happy New Year to all of you creative souls! We have moved some things around at Kindred Spirits and I have taken over part of the space as my studio/workshop where it will be much more convenient to teach art classes and celebrate your creations through art walks and events. What I want to accomplish, through my classes is not so much that you look at your creation to reach your ideal of perfection, but through the creative process, find your soul, see what amazing gift you have been blessed with and through that, share with the rest of the world. (Who knows what changes we can make). I’m offering but a catalyst and a space to move forward with this in mind.
Below is a list of some of the classes and workshops we will be having as well as a series of Sumi-e classes on Wednesday evenings and some mornings. Also Thursday evenings are, “Random Acts of Art,”-open studio style.

Artists Sheri Dinardi, Ilene Gienger-Stanfield, & David Terry create luminous works in the time honored tradition of oil painting. Their paintings of people, structures, and landscapes beautifully capture a moment in time and the essence of the subject.
The Capturing Beauty exhibit features three artists who paint in the traditional oil medium. Creating figurative oil paintings require talent, training, skill, and perseverance. The process of creating an oil painting requires many hours work due to the slow drying time and the paint properties required in layering the colors. The paintings in this exhibit reflect the expertise of these three artists. They are rich in luminous colors and are of profound beauty. While many of the works are reminiscent of great paintings from the past, each of these artists has developed their own artistic style.
Jacksonville artist, Sheri Dinardi studied with Frank Covino where she honed her skills in Old Master oil painting techniques. She also trained with Dan Gerhartz, Michael Malm, and JoAnn Peralta. She has exhibited nationally and has won many awards for her paintings. Ilene Gienger-Stanfield has been painting for over twenty years and resides in Phoenix, OR. She teaches weekly figurative session, private lessons, and has taught workshops nationwide. She holds signature status with American Impressionist Society, Pastel Society of America, Northwest Pastel Society and master signature status with Women Artists of the West. David Terry is originally from Temple, Texas and now resides in Jacksonville. He is a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York, the Portrait Society of America, and the Oil Painters of America. He has won awards in two international contests sponsored by the Portrait Society of America. His work hangs in numerous public and private collections.
Refreshments from Harry & David will be served at the reception on Friday, January 18, 5:30 – 8:00 pm.

Photographer Linda Meerten loves the beauty that surrounds us and tries to show that in her work. As an opportunistic photographer she is seldom without her camera for stopping along the roadside to capture what she sees. She lives in the mountains of Southern Oregon where wildlife and scenery is abundant. Also a sculptor and oil painter, Linda studied art and art history in Europe.
Born in the Netherlands, Linda came to America as an infant and proudly became an American citizen in 2013 at a swearing-in ceremony held at Crater Lake National Park, part of a special event held across the country. She loves hiking the many trails in the area, fishing the Rogue River and spending time with family.
New Members at Art du Jour
We extend a warm welcome to potter Susan Paul-Williams, as well the return of painter Connie Fribance as newest members of our cooperative. Stop by the gallery to see the works of these two magnificent artists.
