SOAR Welcomes Jessica Lee!

Mixed Media painting by Jessica Lee of Ashland, Oregon

Mixed Media painting by Jessica Lee

Jessica Lee

The Southern Oregon Artists Resource is honored to introduce mixed media artist Jessica Lee of Ashland. Her collage paintings incorporate repurposed and ecological materials delivering deep color, textures, and layered assemblages. The mother of two finds inspiration in the nature of petals, branches, feathers, botanicals and the ocean. Furthermore, these organic materials often enhance her paintings. With a foundation as an advocate and guide for young artists, Jessica Lee’s first collections of mixed media creations are emerging for public display. We saw Jessica’s work during an exhibition at GoodBean Coffee in November 2016. We were impressed by her originality and capable use of simplicity and complexity in her paintings.

Mixed Media Works by Jessica Lee at GoodBean Coffee : Eclipse, Mixed media painting by Jessica Lee

“Eclipse,” Mixed media painting by Jessica Lee

“I create mixed media art because it is an empowering way for me to communicate.  It’s the essential language in my daily life, and helps me make sense of my emotions and dreams.   Combining colors, mixing mediums together and feeling paint and textures on my hands entertains me.  Layers of varied tones help me tell the story.  I thrive on a decadent mix of relaxed yet whimsical mystery. Lace is one of my favorite materials because it is delicate and requires such patience.  Utilizing repurposed and ecological materials gives new meaning to my designs.  Rivers, botanicals, stones, wood and feathers inspire me.  Being an artistic advocate and guide for children completes the picture.”

Please visit Jessica’s listing, then follow the links to her Tumblr blog and various social media sites to learn more about the artist and view her art. Another way to get to know Jessica and her work, and to keep up with new shows, is to check her column on our own blog, Art Matters, where we have syndicated her blog.

Mixed Media Tip from Karen O'BrienMixed Media Tip

To add texture to a surface, try using anaglypta wall paper as collage. Anaglypta is a paintable texturized wall paper, found at your local home improvement center. It can be glued down, like collage, to your surface. Paint will pool in the patterns and give your painting depth. If you can’t find textured wall paper, try using gel medium through a stencil. This example shows the use of both techniques. Have some creative fun with this!

Her “Dreams of Men” with the array of organic texture and radiating structure is quite compelling. “Personal Practice” with the wonderful characters and textural qualities is nicely presented in the desaturated color. Eve Margo Withrow – Creative Journeys and Adventures!

NEW TWISTS ~ NEW WORK

One Anemone, paper sculpture on canvas by Eve Margo Withrow
My creative journey has always involved responding to an essential ingredient of an experience and following the threads of that flow to a magical finale.  I trusted the collaboration with an authentic source within and beyond myself. A huge curiosity about this journey has kept my enthusiasm at a fevered pitch for many years.

Recently, the intensity has waned a bit and neither the process nor the outcome has been as compelling.  I wondered if it was simply related to the aging/wisdom journey of slowing down but instead of settling into it, I felt like I was always waiting for an echo, a nudge, and an inspiration.

Going back to clay was not an option.  My hands are no longer strong enough and too arthritic to do the building and my body is no longer strong enough to do the hauling and firing. Plus, the gallery I am part owner of only shows paintings: only work that hangs on the wall. I had no ideas where to go next.

Drawn to the depths of my own presence to ponder I turned again to nature’s state of enlivened being. The seed pod, the ocean coral, the flower; all fully embody a direct experience of being. With this curiosity about the feeling experience of “being the thing” I began to realize that I am closer to knowing the “ME of ME”.

Now is the new beginnings of a new direction in my Artwork.  Sculpture and painting have merged.  I have become an inventor, an engineer and a researcher as I explore new techniques and forms to represent deeper states of being. No doubt there will be many twists and turns; some more successful than others.  The being is in the awareness of each moment on the journey.

10 new pieces will be hanging at Art and Soul Gallery beginning the first week in August.  Drop in and meet me on First Friday Art Walk from 5-8pm August 7th. They are also on my Website under Gallery/New Work.

The Day Of The Mother

mothers day garden1Mothers Day Garden2

The Day Of The Mother

I am standing on my deck surveying new growth in the gardens. All the bulbs are in riotous full bloom and the perennials just on the verge of opening to their color. In the garden where an Apple tree had been removed and replaced with a new peach tree, I check to see if the transplanted flowers have survived the winter and if the wildflower seeds I have spread earlier this spring are sprouting. They are! All of them are delicate yet vigorous and I am thrilled.

As I soak up the joy of this glorious day, I am struck by a thought, “My Mother would love this garden.” Her ashes have resided in a red velvet bag in my dresser drawer for eighteen years. I intended to make a glaze out of them to adorn a hand-made vessel but learned that the process is too toxic and too complicated for me to accomplish. I then planned to spread them in a magnificent place in nature but I either didn’t have her ashes with me or didn’t feel the spot did her justice. Her standards were always high and I felt I rarely met them.

Not this time. I run for the red velvet bag, carefully untie the cording and take her on a tour of the garden, placing a little bit of her at every plant and tree. “Remember how much you loved the blue Columbine when we vacationed In the Rocky Mountains?” as I add her to the earth where blue columbine are blooming.

After eighteen years of looking “out there” for the right place for my mother, I finally have found the perfect spot: Right here with me. It is a final For-Giving.
