I think we can all agree that art materials are seriously cool; they’re fun, exciting, colorful and you can do a whole lot with them! But like anything, the more we know about something, the better we are at using it. For some, the desire is simply to increase the amount of fun and creativity, enhancing the experience during a free time activity. For others, the goal may be to develop and hone specific artistic skills.
No matter what your drive to create is, the common element in learning a new skill is a more positive and successful result that builds self-confidence and promotes creativity. Did you know that the two main chemicals involved in the creative process are serotonin and dopamine, which is also good for your mental health?
At Central Art, learning is at the front of our minds – Our 2023 Classroom Lineup is packed with workshops and classes in a variety of artistic mediums, with focuses ranging from beginner-to-advanced, both project- and technique-based. Taught by some of the Rogue Valley’s top art instructors, the time is now to step up your art skills by signing up for a new class this summer!

Insert old adage meaning “busy/distracted” here ____. We’ve all been here before – all the excitement at the start of the new year when we were jotting down our ambitious (or even low-key) resolutions or directives, giving way to the long months of just keeping warm. When you glance back at that list, some of these personal promises can feel like they’ve already been broken.
If the muse feels elusive, here’s a friendly reminder: you still have the list within you; you are not bound to a set order or timetable to complete it. Instead of beating yourself up, pick yourself up by doing something creative! Pick your favorite from the lineup and start there.
This month at Central Art we’re encouraging you to pick up where you left off, stop letting those unfulfilled resolutions live rent-free in your head, and get going with your next project! Never tried block printing or carving your own block? Do it. How about playing with encaustic wax? Wax on, my friend.
Now is the time to take those bucket list items out, then use that bucket to wash off those brushes!

“My work exists as an invitation for viewers to examine their ecological interactions and relationships. I aspire to evoke deep reverence for the inherent connection with our plant and animal kin before they fade into distant memories due to human negligence. I create art as a form of activism and land stewardship that fosters mutualism and intimacy facilitated through the reciprocal act of printmaking. My work embraces collective experiences of life and death that promote sustainability while honoring the natural cycles of growth, decay and regeneration.
My most recent work exposes my ritualized obsession with collecting, organizing, illustrating and rearranging my personal archive of found artifacts. The time spent harvesting and working with natural materials bonds me with local ecologies. By reproducing these reclaimed remains in copper, I immortalize and perpetuate their existence through replication via the art of printmaking. A renewal of kinship with our cohabitants is necessary for our shared futures to endure.”

I care, a lot, about everything. I’ve often wished I could turn down the dial or switch it off entirely, however that’s the place from which the art flows. In painting another human being, I get to express this care. When I give detail to my subject’s feelings and experience, it communicates, “I see you. You matter.”
(From artist’s statement)
Through portraiture, Belinda strives to capture the beauty of each face and connect to the story behind it, truly seeing and celebrating every subject.
To see more of Belinda’s art, you can follow her Instagram page here.
