Watercolor Artists, Third Friday News, Live Music at Art du Jour

Art du Jour April 2019:

Art du Jour Gallery, 213 E. Main Street in Medford will be devoted to watercolor in April with Marianne Nielsen and Marilyn Zupan. Third Friday will be on April 19, 5-8 pm with musical entertainment by classical guitarist Rod Petrone. Go to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ArtduJourGallery) for updates.

Guest Artist Marianne Nielsen

Marianne Nielsen's watercolor paintings

With a passion for watercolor, Marianne Nielsen say it is her favorite media because of its versatility regarding techniques and textures. While enjoying all styles and subjects, her inspiration comes from all things in nature, especially animals and flowers.

After 5 years learning from the late Marshal McDaniels, he literally changed the way she looks at everyday things like clouds, trees, water and life.   Soon after she became a watercolor instructor herself with 6 to 8 students, which has since grown to 4 weekly classes with more than 50 students.  Since 2007, many of her students have also gone on to become teachers themselves as well as having their work in local galleries.

Marianne is a former Art du Jour member and active participant with the Watercolor Society of Oregon.  She also gives workshops in Grants Pass, as well as recent workshop in Tucson, Arizona. She has shown and sold artwork at 7 Feathers Hotel and Casino Resort, and is currently a member of the Grants Pass Museum of Art. She has also been showing work at Gallery One in Grants Pass and will be their featured in July.

Marianne’s website is: www.nielsenwatercolors.com.

Featured Artist Marilyn Zupan

Featured Artist Marilyn Zupan

Marilyn Zupan has always had a deep love for England’s gentle country landscapes and rustic stone homes and bridges. Her father was English and she spent three years in England falling in love with her ancestral land.  “Being able to recreate those memories in watercolor is pure joy.”, she writes.

Having taught calligraphy in the Rogue Valley for more than 20 years, Marilyn began taking watercolor classes in 2009 and has been painting ever since. In 2011 Marilyn was juried into the Watercolor Society of Oregon.

As an added attraction to our featured wall, Marilyn will be teaming up with potter Susan Paul Williams for the entire month of April.

Calling All Rogue Valley Artists!!!

As one of downtown Medford’s premiere art galleries, we are pleased to introduce our newest member Winnifred Liang. We are still actively seeking new artists living in the Rogue Valley region who would like to join our cooperative and display their work to the Medford community. Membership includes an active role in the Art in Bloom festival in May, as well as our monthly Third Friday event.  Media to be juried for membership includes pottery, sculpture, photography and jewelry.  Contact the gallery by email at [email protected], or log into our website: www.artdujourgallery.com for full membership information.

May will be our 3rd annual “People’s Choice” photography contest with the theme being “My Favorite Photo”.  As in the past the popular photography contest will be on display and voted on during Art in Bloom on Mother’s Day weekend. In August the People’s Choice theme will be “Summer Fun” to include all mediums, and October the theme will be “Changing Seasons” also to include all mediums. In the event of a large turnout for the “all medium” contests, we may divide the judging into two separate categories between photography and painting.  See our website for entry rules and entry form, or stop by the gallery during our regular open hours. As in the past these exhibits are dependent on the number of participants and the gallery reserves to right to cancel the contest with full refund if turnout is minimal.

Capturing Beauty: Paintings by Sheri Dinardi , Ilene Gienger-Stanfield, and David Terry

January 11 – February 22, 2019

Artists Sheri Dinardi, Ilene Gienger-Stanfield, & David Terry create luminous works in the time honored tradition of oil painting. Their paintings of people, structures, and landscapes beautifully capture a moment in time and the essence of the subject. The Capturing Beauty exhibit features three artists who paint in the traditional oil medium. Creating figurative oil paintings requires talent, training, skill, and perseverance. The process of creating an oil painting requires many hours work due to the slow drying time and the paint properties required in layering the colors. The paintings in this exhibit reflect the expertise of these three artists. They are rich in luminous colors and are of profound beauty. While many of the works are reminiscent of great paintings from the past, each of these artists has developed their own artistic style.

Refreshments from Harry & David will be served at the reception.

The Rogue Gallery & Art Center is a non-profit community art center, founded in 1960 to promote and support the arts in the Rogue Valley. The center exhibits a wide range of artistic styles and mediums from local and national artists. Programming includes art educational opportunities for children and adults. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from       11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Call (541)772-8118 for more info or visit www.roguegallery.org.

Bruce Barnes has traveled and painted in Oregon, California, Canada, and across Europe. His sketchbook, paints, and brushes are always part of his pack.

Bruce moved to the Rogue Valley in 2002, where he quickly joined the Rogue Valley art scene. He now paints en plein air with The Artists’ Workshop in Jacksonville, Ashland’s Urban Sketchers, The Rogue River Artists Group, and the OLLI watercolor SIG. He has attended numerous painting workshops, and is guided by his painting icons James Fletcher Watson, David Howell, and Virgil Harton, all Englishmen.

He created and conducted popular OLLI classes at SOU focusing on plein air sketching and watercolor painting. He has been featured in a dozen or more one-artist showings at Valley galleries and wineries. For more information on this artist he may be reached at his Ashland studio at 541-201-1947.

Featured Artist Linda Meerten

Coastal scene by Linda Meerten. Image provided by the artist

Photographer Linda Meerten loves the beauty that surrounds us and tries to show that in her work. As an opportunistic photographer she is seldom without her camera for stopping along the roadside to capture what she sees. She lives in the mountains of Southern Oregon where wildlife and scenery is abundant. Also a sculptor and oil painter, Linda studied art and art history in Europe.

Born in the Netherlands, Linda came to America as an infant and proudly became an American citizen in 2013 at a swearing-in ceremony held at Crater Lake National Park, part of a special event held across the country.  She loves hiking the many trails in the area, fishing the Rogue River and spending time with family.

New Members at Art du Jour

We extend a warm welcome to potter Susan Paul-Williams, as well the return of painter Connie Fribance as newest members of our cooperative.  Stop by the gallery to see the works of these two magnificent artists.
