Third Annual Contemporary Mosaic Art Exhibition
September 19 to October 26

Graffiti II, Mosaic by Ilse Cordoni

CONTEMPORARY MOSAIC ART (CMA) is honored to bring together an international juried exhibition of mosaic art from September 19 to October 26, 2016, at The Center for Visual Arts, Thorndike and Retzlaff Galleries, Art Building, Southern Oregon University.  The exhibition will be open to the public 10-4, Monday through Friday September 19 – October 26.

This extraordinary show will be on display for over a month and will coincide with the Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit to be held October 6-9, 2016. The galleries will be open extended hours during the CMA Summit weekend.

This juried exhibition invites us to enter the vast and creative world of both ancient and contemporary mosaic art. The works surprise us as we view traditional and non-traditional executed fine art mosaics which, incorporate innovative subject matter, techniques and material, allowing the mosaic to burst forth with subtle or aggressive movement, drawing us into the subject and illuminating clarity of the art and our own vision.

The mosaicist assembles small bits of stone, glass, pottery, and/or repurposed material and assembles them into an image, a feeling, a spirit, and a representation. Mosaic artists chop, cut, hammer and nip to create beauty out of those bits. It’s a beautiful order, a deliberate order, an order of the heart, of dreams, of unending skill and patience. These artists represent the world in ways that have never before been seen.

The artists represented in this exhibition have discovered their own artistic “voice” and use mosaic art to express their unique vision of the world around them. The mosaics presented in this exhibit are a delight to the eye and an inspiration to the soul.

Come join us for First Friday Art Walk on October 7, 5:00 to 8:00 PM at SOU Art Building for a chance to view this extraordinary show, meet the artists, purchase a piece of original mosaic art to take home and enjoy a little light refreshment.

Élan Chardin Gombart & Cathy Valentine, Abstract in Nature, acrylic and encaustic

Using elements and influence of the natural world around us as well as drawing from states of a more human nature, Cathy Valentine and Élan Chardin Gombart both create abstract work that present layers of floating shapes, colors and lines.  While both artists incorporate hints and clues of objects or landscape, the where/what/how are given over to the reflection and imagination of the viewer.

CATHY VALENTINE

Cathy Valentine has been working with an encaustic process for several years. She builds up multiple layers of wax while drawing, staining and/or carving each layer to create a depth of transparency. The use of this material combines many disciplines; collage, printmaking imagery and sculptural qualities are seen in the final result.

Élan Chardin Gombart, Screen l, acrylic on panel, 36″x42″

ÉLAN CHARDIN GOMBART

Élan received her BFA in visual design from the University of Oregon in 1995 via a circuitous route that included studies at The Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR, Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and The University of New Mexico. Having worked extensively in photography and drawing, Élan has also explored bookbinding, letterpress printing, and currently, primarily works in mixed media painting.
Her most current paintings present colliding layers of colors and textures that hint at elements of landscape or micro/macro worlds existing simultaneously in a positive/negative relationship to each other.
Artist reception: First Friday, October 7th from 5-8 p.m. Show runs October 6th – November 1st

Oak Street Studio
Scenic Southern Oregon

“On Howard’s Prairie Lake,” a new acrylic painting by Leif Trygg is featured at Oak Leaf Studio in October.

Artist Leif Trygg expands both his medium and his viewpoint during First Friday, October 7 from 5pm to 8 pm at Oak Street Studio, 247 Oak Street between Hansen Howard and the Ashland Artworks.

The Studio will exhibit recent acrylic paintings of evocative scenes here in Southern Oregon. For the past year, Trygg has been painting exclusively in pastels, while prior efforts were composed with watercolors. “I like working with the texture of acrylics; the effects are more three-dimensional and the colors are more permanent than pastels,” says Trygg.

Whew! after closing Illahe Studios and Gallery on Fourth Street in Ashland, I have been trying to catch up on sleep, sort through boxes and boxes of files from the gallery and artwork…as well as some long vacations and travel.

The plan is to open the Studio on First Friday evenings starting in May, and be open by appointment other times.

I moved the slab roller and the kiln and am ready to get back to work, looking for opportunities for mosaics and custom work, Public Art and murals.
