One-day Sumi Painting Workshop. All levels are welcome. Bring a lunch.
Painters new to sumi-e, and those experienced in East Asian watercolor painting will be introduced and encouraged to look at the “world” in a different artistic perspective. This workshop will concentrate on learning how to see your surroundings and express your feelings in Sumi style. We will paint landscapes, (from photos you have), daily items, vegetables, breads, flowers and anything you like in your daily life in traditional and expressive Sumi style. Energetic strokes and unique, expressive composition will be emphasized. We will use sumi ink to paint on Sprinkle Gold paper, to interpret flowers in Sumi style. The fusion of western and Eastern techniques is encouraged. There will be demos, exercises, and one-on-one attention. Philosophy and brief history of Chinese and Asian art and usage of Chops will also be discussed in the workshop.
Since this is the Dog year, we will also work on painting a simplified style of a cute dog and writing Chinese characters of Dog and Blessing. You are encouraged to bring photos of your favorite dogs to the workshop that we could work on.
*For repeating students, bring your sketch screen books and we will transfer sketch to paintings.
