Carbondale, 2012 winner of the Colorado Governor’s Arts Town award, is the “happening” place for art, food, and outdoor sports in Colorado’s famous Roaring Fork Valley. Its annual sculpture show, Art aRound Town has won notice from around the country, and again this year the jury will be chaired by local resident and internationally famous sculptor James Surls. Located in the Rockies between Glenwood Springs (recently named ”Most Fun Town in America” by Rand McNally and USA Today) and glittery Aspen, lively Carbondale is the beating heart of the valley for restaurants, festivals, and fresh art, all in the shadow of spectacular Mt. Sopris. In September 2013, the Powers Art Center, featuring Jasper John’s works on paper, will have its grand opening in the community and become a national arts attraction. Locals, and thousands of visitors in this Roaring Fork Valley’s hot spot will see select work!

The purpose of the Aperture Portfolio Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and highlight artists whose work deserves greater recognition. When choosing the first-prize winner and runners-up, Aperture’s editorial and curatorial staff look for innovative bodies of work haven’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues. Previous winners and runners-up include Michal Chelbin, Latoya Ruby-Frazier, Alexander Gronsky, Sarah Palmer, and Jordan Tate, among others.

The first-prize winner receives $3,000 and has his or her work exhibited at Aperture. The winner and up to five runners-up are featured on Aperture’s website, accompanied by a brief statement written by Aperture’s staff. All winners are announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches forty thousand subscribers, including writers, critics, and other members of Aperture’s global community. The winners also have the opportunity to offer their prints for sale to Aperture’s collectors and patrons through our limited-edition print program.

The 2013 Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island, DISCOVER, seeks proposals for sculpture engaged in a contemporary conversation about art within a natural environment. The theme is intended to inspire submissions that foster discovery, exploration, interaction, recreation, education and an element of surprise within the beauty of the Lowcountry region. The year 2013 will mark the 350th anniversary of William Hilton discovering what became known as Hilton Head Island.

Up to twenty large-scale outdoor sculptures will be selected by an esteemed jury based upon artistic excellence, innovation, interactivity, originality, and the work’s ability to enhance the natural and cultural environment as well as reflect the values and diversity of Hilton Head Island.

All artists chosen to participate will be awarded a $2,000 participation stipend. One of the sculptures will be purchased for an amount of $25,000 to $75,000 then donated to the Town of Hilton Head Island’s growing public art collection. Three additional sculptures will be selected as “People’s Choice.” These artists will be awarded cash prizes with the possibility for an extended temporary leasing agreement. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2013.

The Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island will take place from mid-September, 2013 through Mid-January, 2014 at Coastal Discovery Museum’s historic Honey Horn Plantation. The 2013 Exhibition estimates an audience of over 30,000 students, residents and tourists.

The Neddy at Cornish is an annual artist award program supported by the Behnke Foundation and housed at Cornish College of the Arts in memory of Robert E. (“Ned”) Behnke and in celebration of his life as an artist. Each year, two $25,000 unrestricted awards are given—one in painting and one in any medium or combination of media grounded in the visual arts—to artists living and working in the greater Puget Sound region.
