Fall Fiber Fun Series with Iris Chinook
Weekends: November 11, 12, 18, 19 at the Guild

We invite you to join us at the Guild this fall to delve into THREE fun fiber techniques in our Fall Fiber Fun Series led by Iris Chinook. Discover the deep joy in making everyday things with your own hands and walk away with the knowledge of how to successfully make cordage, knit, crochet, read patterns, and correct mistakes. During this 4-part beginner class series in the month of November, you’ll learn and understand the process of working with different fibers to create 3 separate projects: A dishcloth, granny-square, and basic cordage. Seek inspiration to take these traditional techniques and create personalized clothing, scarves, blankets, purses, and more!

Iris Chinook has been exploring and delighting in the creation of textiles for over 50 years. She loves making useful, beautiful things that she can utilize in her everyday life. Primarily identifying as a Spinner (making her own yarn for her projects), she is looking forward to sharing her wealth of experience with you.

November 11, 11am-1pm • Crochet Like a Granny!: In this class you’ll receive information about different materials and projects appropriate for crochet and encouragement to explore the basic “granny-square” pattern to see all of the extraordinary uses to which these basic, “starter” squares can be put! You will learn how to choose the right size crochet hook, tie yarn, chain stitches and join together to create a foundation circle, and learn single and double crochet stitches. After finishing classyou will know the fundamental building blocks of crochet to create anything that inspires you, such as pure art sculptures, wall hangings, toys, or etc.

November 12, 11am-1pm • Knit Shirley’s Gourmet Dishcloth: Knitting is an extremely versatile craft for making clothing as well as home accessories, pet coats, blankets, etc. In this class, you will gain the confidence to make your way through basic knitting instructions to facilitate honing of your skills and an increased awareness of different fibers, their properties, etc. You will learn how to cast-on, make a knit stitch, yarn-over increase and decrease, understand how to read basic knitting instructions, and which end of the circular needles to use! Iris will also show how to use a darning needle to tie-off and weave-in a long tail of yarn that is resistant to unraveling with the heavy use a washcloth receives.

November 18, 11am-1pm • Lucet Cordage: What did we ever use before plastic twine and commercially produced ropes were invented? The ancient art of cordage has allowed the evolution of our species to make everyday useful items. In this class, Iris will discuss the origin and history of the Lucet, an ancient Viking tool and technique of making strong, durable string and cordage that does not unravel when cut. You will learn what kind of materials make good cordage, how to start the cord on the Lucet tool, how to keep going until you have the length you want, how to tie-off yarn, and brainstorm on ways to use your finished string. It’s a great way to use up assorted scraps of yarn, doesn’t require a pattern, and is highly portable.

November 19, 11am-2pm: Final class drop-in opportunity to ask questions and receive help troubleshooting problems with Iris. This final session will be three hours from 11am-2pm and is optional.

Individual Classes are $30/each or $80 to attend the whole series. Classes are appropriate for ages 14 and up. Material Fees are separate and payable directly to the teacher upon arrival in CASH. You get to keep all materials provided to you, which include knitting/crochet needles, fiber, etc. If you would like to request a scholarship due to financial hardship, please send an email to [email protected] or call us at 541-592-5019.

Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday September 30 for the opening of our fall exhibit at Art in the Vineyard, our art gallery at Bridgeview Winery in Cave Junction! The work of Charles Churchill & Miri Admoni will be on display until November 27. Bridgeview is now open from 12-7pm!

Charles Churchill has been a sculptor for over 4 decades and a teacher for 26. His passion for art evolved from a love of jazz, leading him to beat poetry, abstract art, and even motorcycles. In 1989, he graduated art school at Sonoma State University and began showing and selling his art. Abstract assemblage and light sculptures make up a large portion of his body of work, made almost entirely of disregarded industrial scraps. By using found wood, glass, and metals, he celebrates and honors the materials made from our planet’s resources. Charles has taught art and curated exhibitions at Sonoma State University and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. He has also shared the art of assemblage to children of all ages in various schools and Head Start programs in Northern California. Charles was the August 2021 Featured Artist at Central Art Gallery in Medford, OR and currently has 4 pieces on display at the Guild Gallery & Art Center. To see more of his work, visit www.charleschurchillsculptor.com.

Miri Admoni (b. 1954 in Tel Aviv, Israel) is a mixed media, glass, and jewelry artist, who shares her life between Israel and the USA. Arts and crafts have always been a part of Miri’s life since childhood. Her formal education was in graphic design, where she worked as a freelance designer and producer of unique recycled paper products and specialized in packaging. During 2004-2010 Miri studied various glass techniques, and from 2011-2012 she studied metalsmithing in a private studio and started to create jewelry with glass. Nature has always been the greatest source of inspiration. Initially, Miri was inspired by her surroundings in Israel, the rich and diverse nature scenes between the Mediterranean Sea and the Judean desert. That led to the creation of the Alchemy glass series and the collaboration with Bedouin women artists. Now Miri lives and works from her home studio in Selma OR, where she continues to explore her relationship with nature. To view or purchase her work, visit her Saatchi site!

5th Annual Let's Write! Event at the Guild!

The Southern Oregon Guild proudly presents the 5th Annual “Let’s Write!” Event – A Day of Writing for All Kinds of Writers, Exploring the Art of Language! This year’s theme is: The Power of Words & The Writer’s Conscience. Join 6 local writers on Saturday September 9 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Guild Gallery & Art Center, for a series of interactive workshops aimed to actively inspire your own literary practice!

The 2023 Keynote Speaker will be Paul Fattig, lifelong Illinois Valley resident and Marine Corps Veteran. Paul shares that “growing up poor without a television during the 1950s and ‘60s, I have loved books since early elementary school. Writing books is a dream come true for this former Kerby kid.” In addition to his keynote address, Paul will be presenting “Tapping into One’s Roots,” a non-fiction prose workshop.

Following the keynote address at 9:30am, will be three 90-minute sessions, each with a choice of two separate workshops, for a total of six different presentations. Facilitators will provide support while guiding attendees to create their own fresh writing. All presenters and workshops are described below.

Kokayi Nosakhere • Effective Protest Writing & Writing American History

Activist Kokayi Nosakhere, with 30 years of experience, invites you to learn what formulas work to effectively communicate political messages. Come prepared to learn who labor leader Emma Goldman is; to read a portion of Black Liberation Movement icon Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail;” be reminded of the wisdom of historian Howard Zinn – and to write your own 500 word editorial concerning a current event of injustice inside the United States of America. Also with the multiple controversies currently swirling around what it means to be an “American,” how do historians do it? What is the responsibility of historians in this “moment.” Learn about primary documents, how to find them and how to use them to “write” accurate “history.” Then, try your hand at the 5 paragraph method used by college students all across the country to convince their professors they actually heard the lecture. Five years ago, author, community builder and Black cultural expert, Kokayi Nosakhere relocated to Southern Oregon. In 2019, he attended the 12th Annual Beloved Music Festival. Since then, he has focused his energies on building a BIPoC Sanctuary.

Amy Miller • Relationship & Interdependence

In this 90-minute workshop, we’ll explore poems of relationship and interdependence between humans and animals, and humans and work. Taking some exquisite and varied poems as inspiration, we’ll write poems or short prose of our own about the physicality, challenges, and realities of work in our lives, and our complex connections with the animals and insects around us. Amy Miller’s Astronauts won the 2022 Chad Walsh Chapbook Prize, and her full-length poetry collection The Trouble with New England Girls won the Louis Award from Concrete Wolf Press. Her writing has appeared in Barrow Street, Catamaran, Copper Nickel, Narrative, Rattle, RHINO, Terrain, and ZYZZYVA, and she received a 2021 Oregon Literary Fellowship. She currently lives in Ashland, OR.

Paul Fattig • Tapping into One’s Roots

The focus will be on capturing a world that you know better than anyone else: your own life and times. Using documentary journalism, learn to write about the interesting aspects of your life, the good and the bad, the humorous and the tragic. Call relatives or childhood friends to rehash favorite anecdotes, then turn those anecdotes into chapters. Continually step out of your lane to read everything you can get your grubby little fingers on. Reading widely is an essential exercise to successful writing. As an Illinois Valley urchin, Paul Fattig attended Kerby Elementary School and Illinois Valley High School. After serving in the Marine Corps, he graduated from the University of Oregon in 1979 with a degree in journalism. A print journalist for 40 years, he retired in 2013 to write books. He is now writing his fourth book.

Gary Lark • Taking My Self to Work

Work is a two-way lens, what we do and who we are. Can we capture the alchemy that rises from the ordinary? I’ve been a carpenter, janitor, salesman, hospital aide and librarian; how about you? With your work, paid or unpaid, what have you observed there? What do you feel there? Is there a poignant moment hidden in the movements of the task. We’ll explore some poems and write a few. Gary Lark’s most recent poetry collections are “Easter Creek,” Main Street Rag, “Daybreak on the Water,” Flowstone Press and “Ordinary Gravity,” Airlie Press . His work has appeared in Beloit Poetry Journal, Catamaran, Rattle, Sky Island and others. He claims the Umpqua River as the main teacher in his life.

Diana Coogle • What’s on Your Conscience? Let’s Write About it!

Explore possible essay topics based on the question, what’s on your conscience? Then we will focus on various approaches to that topic: A narrative about a childhood incident? A process of how to salve a guilty conscience? The class follows a loose format of a few words of explanation followed by time for writing, then workshopping with a partner with input from the instructor. We’ll end with a nonobligatory sharing of essays. As an academic, Diana Coogle was a Marshall Scholar; taught at RCC, the University of Oregon, and Sweden’s Göteborg Universitet; and earned a Ph.D. in 2012. As a writer, she was a 20-year JPR commentator, published seven books, was an Oregon Book Awards finalist, and was a writing conference keynote speaker.

Michael Spring • Into the Surreal

Reality bumming your trip? Move into surreal poetry. Learn how to create poems with pliable dreamscapes. From talking buttons to hallways inside of leaves, you will discover yourself interacting with the unexpected, the magical, and the imaginal. In this workshop we’ll review what surrealism is and what it has to offer. Several prompts will be used to create surreal poems. Most of the workshop will focus on writing drafts and sharing your work. Michael Spring, of Brookings, Oregon, is the author of five poetry books and one children’s book. His poetry books have won several awards and distinctions, including The James Tate Prize, The Turtle Island Poetry Award, an honorable mention for the Eric Hoffer Book Award, and a Luso-American Fellowship from DISQUIET International. He is a poetry editor for Pedestal Magazine and Flowstone Press.

The day will conclude with an Open Mic at 4pm, in which participants can share the work they created throughout the day. Coffee, Lunch, and Refreshments are included. Event Fees are on a sliding scale from $35 to $55. Student fee is $25. Please honestly self-select your payment tier based on your financial picture. If the sliding scale would be a financial hardship, please call 541-592-5019 or email [email protected] to inquire about available scholarships.

Art in the Vineyard at Bridgeview Winery
Featuring the solo work of Brian Davis
Sunday July 23, 5-8pm • Opening Celebration

Join us on Sunday July 23 from 5-8pm to celebrate our new summer exhibit at ART IN THE VINEYARD, our new Guild Gallery at Bridgeview Winery’s tasting room in Cave Junction! In April 2023, we kicked off our new collaboration with the work of Sheila Mason, and now for our second show we are displaying a solo collection of paintings by local artist Brian Davis! Opening reception is free with delicious appetizers provided and a variety of Bridgeview wine available for purchase. Come meet Brian Davis!

Brian Davis was exposed early in life to a world of art and creativity during high school. His two instructors were of the surreal persuasion and being fascinated by it seemed to stick with him! Fast forward through marriage, children and work sidelined his ability to make art a priority. Now living in the idyllic Southern Oregon town of Merlin, Brian has allowed his channels to re-open into art. Brian’s small hobby farm gives him a wide variety of subject matter to draw inspiration from for expressions in acrylic or oil paints; a bouquet of flowers, a bowl of fruit, or vegetables on the vine. His personal art studio completes a space from which to create. Brian’s work is currently on display at the Southern Oregon Guild Gallery in Kerby, Oregon. Bridgeview Winery & Vineyard is located at: 4210 Holland Loop Rd. Cave Junction, OR 97523

They are open everyday from 12pm-8pm!

Kris Wildman is a classically trained soprano and voice teacher with over 40 years of professional experience in choral, theatre, concert and sacred music.  Her graduation recital (MFA, Voice, CalArts 2006) of music by living American women led to participation in composer Maria Newman’s house concert series.  Since moving to Selma, Kris has performed with Jefferson Baroque Orchestra, S. Oregon repertory singers, and house concerts with various collaborators.

Alyssa Babin is a poet, musician, independent parent, and candle maker currently living on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast. Alyssa was inspired to create her business, Fireheart Candles, when her child Alex was still in the womb. The Guild Gallery & Art Center is located in the historic Kerby Belt Building at 24353 Redwood Highway Kerby, OR 97531.

Are you looking for an opportunity to learn a fun new craft this spring? We invite you to join us at the Guild Gallery & Art Center on Saturday May 20 from 1-3pm to learn how to make Citrus Beeswax Candles with Alyssa Babin of Fireheart Candles. During this 2 hour hands-on workshop led by Guild Member and local artisan Alyssa Babin, you’ll make and take home your own citrus beeswax candle using high-quality organic ingredients. Beeswax doesn’t contain any toxic chemicals, and because there are no additives or chemicals, beeswax burns clean and doesn’t produce unsightly black soot. When burned, beeswax candles produce negative ions which bind with air pollutants (positive ions) and drop to the floor, removing them from the air and leaving it cleaner!

All candles will be made inside a large citrus peel of your choosing which emits an uplifting natural citrus scent when used! Learn how DIY candle-making can be easily adapted to your own unique tools that you have available at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to treat Mom or a caregiver to the class for Mother’s Day and make a candle together!

Class fees are on a sliding scale $35-$55 and include all materials. When you register, please honestly self-select your contribution. If the sliding scale would be a hardship and you’d like to request a scholarship, please send an email to [email protected] or call us at 541-592-5019.

ABOUT ALYSSA BABIN

Guild Member, Alyssa Babin, is a poet, musician, independent parent, and candle maker currently living on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast. Alyssa was inspired to create her business, Fireheart Candles, when her child Alex was still in the womb. Driven by a desire to express herself creatively and spend as much time as possible with Alex, Fireheart Candles was born! Fireheart, Alex’s middle name, was chosen by Alyssa’s niece and means fire and love all at once–a metaphor for the warmth and beauty that candles offer us. Alyssa makes every candle by hand, beginning with mixing and pouring concrete for each container. After curing, they are then hand painted with her unique marbling technique and laser etched with her own designs created by Adobe Illustrator and laser etching robots. Local beeswax is then mixed with organic essential oils and poured into each unique container to create her one-of-a-kind candles! Every candle she makes is infused with love and the special bond between mother and child is felt! To learn more about Alyssa and Fireheart Candles, visit www.fireheartcandles.com. Alyssa’s beeswax candles, in various sizes and scents, are also for sale at the Guild Gallery & Art Center.

Art in The Vineyard: A New Guild Gallery at Bridgeview Winery, opening celebration on Saturday April 15, 2023 from 5-8pm

Kicking off with a solo show featuring the art of local landscape painter Sheila Mason!

The Southern Oregon Guild & Bridgeview Winery proudly present, ART IN THE VINEYARD, a new Guild Member exclusive art gallery at Bridgeview’s newly renovated Tasting Room in Cave Junction! Kicking off our new gallery, Sheila Mason will be displaying a solo collection of her landscape paintings and sculpture. Join in on Saturday April 15, 2023 from 5-8pm for a FREE opening celebration to hear Sheila share her creative inspirations and answer any questions. Light appetizers will be provided along with a variety of Bridgeview wines available for tasting and purchase. Bridgeview Winery specializes in German varietals such as Pinot Noir and Riesling. They currently have a gold medal award winning Oregon Pinot Noir that has received a 89 point rating with Wine Spectator and is a great value!

Sheila Mason is a self-taught artist who lives in the mountains of the Illinois Valley of Southern Oregon. Her textured landscape paintings celebrate the flora and fauna of the Siskiyou & Kalomiopsis Wilderness, specifically the Pacific Coast Redwoods. Painting to her is about allowing the mind’s eye to stand among the trees away from the hustle and bustle of life’s minutiae. With each piece, Mason invites the viewer to join her in smelling the forest and hearing the sounds that abound there. She incorporates 3D textural elements into many of her 2D works. Tree bark comes alive and extends off the canvas through her unique application of thick gesso and plaster. She seeks to refresh the viewer and touch the soul, reveling in the glory among the calm and wonder of the trees. Sheila Mason’s work is currently on display at the Southern Oregon Guild Gallery & Art Center in Kerby, Oregon.

Bridgeview Winery is located at 4210 Holland Loop Road Cave Junction, OR 97523.

Living simply outdoors has allowed her to deepen her artistic expression and raw materials with which to work. For the last 15 years Corbin has been leading needle felting workshops, both locally and in Northern California, for both adults and kids.
