Zoe Alowan: Selections from collections “First Ladies of Jazz” and “Ecstatic Grace”

Zoe Alowan invokes the beautiful colors of Matisse and Mondrian while also delivering a Reductionist’s boldness. Using large rhythmic strokes Zoe Alowan depicts the shimmer and swinging vitality of the First Ladies of Jazz, one of her favorite subjects.

Also showing by Zoe Alowan are selections from her “Ecstatic Grace” collection inspired by traditional Devadasi Sadir.

Painting since a child and with an Oberlin art degree, she also helped establish the Manifesto of Reductionism along with other artists from the Grass Valley Graphics Group. Her art has graced the venues of hundreds of renowned jazz musicians. Wynton Marsalis, Brandford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and others have preformed alongside her monumental jazz paintings at International Association for Jazz Educators (IJAE) events from 2003 to 2008.

November’s Featured Artist is C. Von Teaselworth. Fascinated by hidden desire, Von Teaselworth explores the darkness of longing with an illustrative touch. Humorous, surreal figures cast a shadow of their vulnerability behind vivid colour palettes.  “In my dreams I see the perfect girl who, ironically, is not perfect, and always changing.”

On November 15th and 16th, Art Inspires Ashland will bring together some of the world’s most creative minds from various schools of artistic expression for a weekend of presentations, discussions and workshops. This event has been designed to inspire people from all walks of life.

The highlight of the weekend: three featured artists will talk about their skills, inspirations, and accomplishments in 20-minute presentations held at the Historic Ashland Armory on Saturday, November 16th. These same artists will lead workshops during the day on Saturday, aimed at inspiring artists and art enthusiasts by working closely with these high-caliber artists and creators.

The three featured artists are Juliette Aristides, classical painter, instructor and founder of Aristides Atelier at the Gage Academy of Fine Art in Seattle, WA, Reina-Marie Loader, film-maker of independent sociopolitical films from Vienna, Austria, and Lucy Knisley, illustrator, comic artist and author from New York City.  Along with the presentations, each artist will be teaching workshops, sharing theirs skills with the community.
