Continental Divide: Borderlands Wildlife, People and the Wall

Continental Divide is an exhibit of 30 large canvas photo prints that depict the land, wildlife and people of the borderlands of the United States and Mexico, and the impact that construction of a border wall is having on them.

The images in the exhibit were taken during a three and a half week expedition with the International League of Conservation Photographers along the 2000-mile border between the United States and Mexico. The expedition included 13 photographers who documented a diverse range of borderlands flora, fauna and cultures.

Sponsored by the Sierra Club Borderlands team, the opening reception on First Friday will include wine by Roxy Ann Winery and appetizers from Buttercloud Bakery.

The exhibit debuted in April, 2009 at the House of Representatives in Washington D.C. Since then it has traveled the country.

Davis and Cline Gallery

Leaves of Gold

The Davis and Cline Gallery will launch its next two month exhibition on Friday April 6th at 5 pm. The show titled LEAVES OF GOLD will feature the artwork of Susan Goldsmith, a Bay Area painter and photographer. In a book about the artist’s work, Patricia Albers describes the process that results in spectacular photo based paintings encased in clear resin.

“Objects as well as images, Susan Goldsmith’s gliding koi, ragged branches of persimmon trees, sprays of eastern redbud, and other fragments of nature reveal the sensibilities to light of the photographer, the painter, and the jeweler.

Goldsmith begins by photographing her subjects. She then digitally reworks her images, cropping, adjusting color values, and dropping out backgrounds. In so doing, she establishes the structures that will allow her to paint freely, transferring her edited transparencies to wood panels using a digital version of a process favored by 19th century photographers striving to emulate paintings. With gloved fingers, Goldsmith builds up her images, alternating layers of resin, thinned (thus translucent) paint, and other mediums.

Their layers of resin refract the light, their sides gleam with metallic powder-flecked pigment, their backgrounds luster with the gold or silver leaf with which Goldsmith grids every panel.”
