Art du Jour Gallery, at 213 E. Main, Medford, is celebrating its tenth anniversary in downtown Medford with two exhibits. Pat Blair, one of the original members, will be the Featured Artist and Corinne Stubson will be Guest Artist in the Salon. The main gallery is filled with new art by gallery members.
Corinne Stubson, a mixed media and altered book artist, will display her works in the Salon. Stubson is a self-taught artist who has worked with stained glass, fabric, and items from nature. Her increased interest in book arts goes back to 2001. Stubson states,” My artist eye seeks out the lessons and essence of life; I find myself creating metaphorical book art, with representation of deep feelings, experiences and even humor.” Stubson’s vision in creating altered books, journals and book sculpture is stimulated by simple words phrases, ideas, and even puns.
Stubson uses different techniques with acrylics, inks and adhesives to collage with a variety of ephemera and found objects. An altered book sculpture titled “She’s Not Your Everyday Type” Resides on the base of an older Remington Typewriter and was featured in the book, by Gabe Cyr, “New Directions in Altered Books”.
Pat Blair’s exhibit of landscape and waterscape works shows her love of plein air painting. Blair says, “I can barely drive down a road without feeling the urge to stop and paint.” She takes many photographs to reference when she is back in her studio . Blair is attracted to reflections on water and to the drama of shadows and light. “Sometimes the light takes the lead role. .. at other times the dark shadows demand the viewers attention and lead the painting.” Blair’s exhibit shows her love and skill depicting nature scenes.
Blair spent most of her adult life as a watercolor painter but recently has moved into the world of pastels. She has taken several workshops with pastel master Richard McKinley and continues to study with him weekly. Blair studied fine art at Eastern New Mexico University and at Southern Oregon University. She now teaches classes at her home studio.
