February brings new exhibits from member artists at Art du Jour Gallery, 213 E. Main in Medford.

During the month of February Peter Coons work will be the featured in the Salon and Jan Hartmann will be the featured artist on the feature wall.

Peter Coons grew up in a family of artists and was influenced at an early age by the arts.  As a youth, his father, a fashion designer, took him to Europe to experience old world culture.  For several years, he lived and attended school in Florence, Italy.  His exposure to the artists of the High Renaissance made an indelible impression.

As a university student he took ceramics and art courses and graduated with a degree in history. Concurrent with his career as a public service executive, he satisfied his artistic impulses with printmaking and painting workshops and classes.  He has been mentored by several expert printmakers and painters in Southern Oregon.  He has studied carefully the techniques of his favorite artists:  Degas, Corot, Turner and Inness.

Peter is a member of the Artist’s Workshop of Southern Oregon and Pastel Society of Oregon. He has received awards from several pastel societies and his works have been displayed at exhibitions of the Pastel Society of Oregon, the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Northwest Pastel Society.

Working with printmaking processes and pastels, Jacksonville artist, Peter Coons, creates both abstract and realistic prints and paintings. With an appreciation of the landscape around us, Peter’s focus is on local scenes.  He loves to portray the intimacy of water features and forest paths.  He also enjoys the expanses of open lands and weather events.   He extracts the essence of his subjects to create transcendent images both with prints and pastel paintings. He finds it stimulating to alternate between expressive or impressionistic treatments and more intimate and introspective tonal works.

Ballet Dancin' by Jan Hartmann

Ballet Dancin’ by Jan Hartmann

Jan Hartmann lived her early years on a ranch close to Ramsay, Montana.  She spent many a day taking walks in the countryside enjoying the scenery and wild animals. This is where she grew to love nature and all the beauty that it offers.

Her love of nature and life’s beauty came together with photography and clay while working at St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, MT.  She always had her camera with her taking pictures of the students, staff and nature all around.  Many of her pictures were published in the donor campaigns for St. Labre Indian School. During a flood at the mission, she left the shelter at 5:00 am and wading in knee deep water took some amazing pictures.

Jan tells a story about being out in the middle of nowhere and seeing a paint stallion with some mares on the hillside off the road.  She of course stopped the car and went up to the fence with her camera to get some pictures.  Realizing she did not bring all her lenses, she started back to the car. All of a sudden, she heard a rattling sound. Looking down she saw a huge diamond back rattler below where she was going to step. Laughing Jan said, “This is the day that I found out that I could leap at least 6 feet sideways. Needless to say, I decided that I had enough shots of the horses.”

Jan’s love of nature and the outdoors shines in the photos displayed on the feature wall.  Her photos were taken in Utah, Arizona, Florida, Montana and of course Oregon. The variety of closeups of cactus, mountains, trails and the beautiful colors of fall are sure to bring pleasure to all that come to the Art du Jour Gallery.
