Roxanne Evans Stout

As I write this it is the evening of Winter Solstice and outside the snow is pouring down.  The Christmas tree lights are on, the candles are lit and although winter is really just beginning, it has been here for weeks now. I can honestly say that I have been loving it.

Roxanne Stout - bird in winter

It was just last June that I left my job as an elementary school teacher to pursue my life as a full time artist. I knew this was a huge move, but never that it would mean so much to me.  How this season of winter, that I had always dreaded, would now be so beautiful.  For now I have time, time to watch the skies change, time to watch the snow drape and cover the land, and all the extra hours that I never had when I had to drive through the snow and ice to get to my job.
I have been an artist all of my life.  But since those first days in June I have changed, I am finally on the pathway that I was meant to be on, to create, to mentor, to design and teach art workshops, to dream, and to make my dreams come true.
Roxanne Stout - collage and book art
The art I make is textured, scratched and scraped.  It can be on a canvas, a piece of wood, a torn piece of watercolor paper, or in the form of a book.  Always in my art is a connection to nature and wildlife.  And always there is a connectedness to times past and the natural history of the world.  Friends have said that there is also a sense of longing and mystery in my art, and I hope that is true.
I have two workshops coming up in the next month, one is an online workshop called “The Thread That Weaves.” So far, I have people signed up from Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand as well as the United States.  I will be teaching a live version of this at The Rogue Gallery in April.
My workshop, Land, Water and Sky will be at The Rogue Gallery on January 19th, 2013.  Join me as I guide you in creating unique paintings and collages of the landscapes that you love.
Thank you Hannah, for welcoming me into Art Matters and SOAR!
