RGAC Best of the Best Exhibition 2012Also on display in the Community Gallery: Art from Jackson & Kennedy Elementary School’s 5th Grade Classes as part of RGAC’s Elementary Art Outreach Program

Opening Reception: Friday, April 20, 4-8pm

(Medford, OR) – April 13, 2012 – The Best of the Best Student Art Show—now in its 27th year—returns to the Rogue Gallery and Art Center (RGAC) as an event that has proven to be enriching and exciting for Rogue Valley high school students, parents, and teachers, while bringing recognition and support to the visual arts.

The Main Gallery is literally filled with artwork made by the most talented and creative students from 16 participating Rogue Valley high schools. Each participating art teacher submitted their students’ work for in-district screening, and then brought the selected work to Rogue Gallery and Art Center for judging by professional artists. Nearly 150 individual artworks including paintings, drawings, collage, illustrations, sculpture, ceramics, and woodwork will be on display beginning on Friday, April 20 with a reception from 4:00 until 8:00pm. The show runs through Friday, May 4, 2012. The community is invited and encouraged to attend. Many thanks to the 2012 Best of the Best program sponsors Lithia Motors, and Harry and David.

Best of the Best Origins and Concept: In 1985-86, members of the Southern Oregon Research and Development Committee (SORD) initiated the Best of the Best Student art show to encourage artistically gifted high school students in the Rogue Valley. This activity, co-sponsored by Southern Oregon University’s Pre-college Youth Programs and different local galleries, far exceeded expectations and has become an annual event each spring.

In 1987-88, Bill LePore, Crater High School, developed an exciting Art Seminar for the exhibiting artists and their teachers. This seminar, held at Southern Oregon State College (SOU), has become a regular feature of the Best of the Best activity, and includes lectures by Southern Oregon University art professors and art workshops with professional artists and instructors.

In 1991-92, Elaine Barker orchestrated a three-year cycle to rotate show locations between the Grants Pass Museum of Art in Grants Pass, the Rogue Gallery & Art Center in Medford, and the Center for the Visual Arts on Southern Oregon University’s campus in Ashland.

In the RGAC Community Gallery: Also on display are over 100 self-portraits from Jackson and Kennedy Elementary Schools’ 5th grade classes—participants in the Rogue Gallery & Art Center’s Elementary Art Outreach Program, which brings the classes to the art gallery and art education to the classroom.

The Rogue Gallery & Art Center is the Rogue Valley’s premier non-profit visual art center, founded in 1960 by artists and educators to nurture and promote the visual arts. The art center showcases emerging and established artists from the region and beyond, presents fine crafts by area artisans, and offers a broad range of visual art classes and workshops for all ages. RGAC’s hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and every third Friday until 8:00pm.
