Drawing for "The Old Woman and the Sea" 6x6 on panel

©katycauker.com

The first drawing for a series titled “The Old Woman and the Sea”.  The drawing is a base for a small painting in acrylic. Drawn from a mental image while trying to apply the fundamentals I’ve learned from Erik Sandgren and still draw without thinking.  Drawing is form of very personal expression and yet the imagery itself can be completely unrelated to personal life. The challenge for me is always taking the drawing and creating a painting.  I struggle with the desire to keep the drawing which is impossible once you start applying paint. The recognition that the drawn line is essentially different from the painted line brings with it the freedom to choose which best expresses the current goal.
