Winter Clouds This little one (5″x7″) was painted on Ampersand Gessoboard. This is a surface I’ve never used before. Although I liked it, it was a little tricky getting the brushstrokes I was after. Standing on a footbridge looking upriver gave me the vantage point. Plein air painted at CSUS Aquatic Ctr. A bright, warm, and sunny winter’s day. The hills and foliage are in their winter coat and yet the intensity of the sun’s light created plenty of color on the water. What appealed to me about this scene was the wild nature of the river tamed by man made elements of umbrellas and the distant dock. 
I’ve been thinking about using contrast as an important tool before starting any painting. Whether it is contrast in colors, values, textures, or all of these elements, I make sure I’m including contrast as an integral part of my composition. … Continue reading → |
