Oak Sentinel Since we had a few days of Spring-like weather I took advantage of the warmth and painted outdoors. This scene has always intrigued me because of the vast distance behind the lone oak. It snowed right after and I was able to get some photos of the same scene which looked like a completely different [...] Continue reading Oak Sentinel By Silvia Trujillo, 141 contributed posts About the author: With a history in fashion design, Silvia Trujillo has 20 years experience in fine art study, painting, and teaching. Before roasting them I thought I’d take advantage of their intense colors and paint them. This demonsration was performed within a 20-25 minute time frame. The lesson was to see and paint the effects of clear glass against a solid backdrop. It’s all about values and keeping the initial structure simple. Close attention to an accurate drawing and a [...] Continue reading Clear glass study By Silvia Trujillo, 141 contributed posts About the author: With a history in fashion design, Silvia Trujillo has 20 years experience in fine art study, painting, and teaching. Called “Breakfast” because of the early morning light and the fact that I ate the oranges and drank the tea after painting them. Another set-up for the sake of working with complimentary colors. In this one I unified the scene with a background and foreground of harmonious blues ranging from aqua to lavender. I wanted to have the orange slice carry most of the interest in the painting. Looking at the composition now, I realize that the cup and oranges could have been moved a little closer together to create a slight tangent in the center of the painting which would have created a better compostion. Oh well, next time…. Although the diffused light softens the dramatic effect, the color compliments and negative space in between the pears add quite a bit of visual interest. The hills and foliage are in their winter coat and yet the intensity of the sun’s light created plenty of color on the water. What appealed to me about this scene was the wild nature of the river tamed by man made elements of umbrellas and the distant dock.
